Message from the President
Michael W. Halloran, CFP, AEP, ChFC, CLU
NAIFA-Jacksonville President
Spring is upon us and 2018 is going by fast. We have had some amazing programs this year. If you have not attended one recently at San Jose Country Club, you are truly missing some great ideas that can help you in your practice!
|
Our annual Day of CE is this month on Thursday, April 19th. Be sure to register early - we have limited seated and may not be able to accommodate walk-in's. Everything including our schedule, hosting 2 tracks this year, is below and on our website.
We are especially grateful to Kansas City Life for sending Donna Sinor, JD, CLU, ChFC from Kansas City , MO. - their Director of Advanced Sales | Business Insurance with over 25 years of experience in the insurance and financial services industry.
We also want to thank MassMutual for sending their Director of Advanced Sales, Michele B. Collins, JD. She joined MassMutual in 2016, having spent the last 10 years in the Advanced Markets Department at MetLife.
We need your help with membership. NAIFA is your professional association. The NAIFA National Council will host a vote during the Congressional Conference next month that could drastically affect the way NAIFA Jacksonville exists today.
We need to rebuild our membership back up to and over 200. We are about 25 short right now. I urge you to reach out to colleagues in the business and encourage them to join or rejoin NAIFA. There is no other organization out there working to protect your clients, commissions and paychecks like NAIFA. Click here to learn more by watching this short 2-minute video.
Save these dates:
May 17th: Membership meeting on the current state of health insurance and what products we can sell to our clients.
June 21st: Tying it all in with Multiline Products.
See you at our next meeting.
Mike Halloran President

IFAPIC UPDATE:
If you have been involved with retirement plans you are aware of the Department of Labor(DOL) regulations. They have hurt our clients and our ability to serve them.
The Fifth United States Appeals Court has struck down the law. The Department of Labor said they will not enforce it. The DOL has not decided to appeal the ruling. If they do appeal the ruling then the case would go to the United States Supreme Court. Many of our companies are still following the law until a decision is made on the appeal.

Nominate a Champion of Diversity Today!
Do you know someone who has demonstrated exceptional efforts to promote the full and equal participation of diverse people within the insurance and financial advising profession?
NAIFA is now accepting nominations for the 2018 Diversity Champion Award thru June 4.
To honor those who live our mission, the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors Diversity Membership Work Group has created the Diversity Champion Award. This award recognizes exceptional efforts to promote the full and equal participation of diverse people within the insurance and financial advising profession. NAIFA members in good standing are eligible for this prestigious award.
Diversity Champion Award Mission:
To be a champion of diversity, recognize the value of our differences and advocate for all members of our community. We embrace inclusion for all; including those that experience discrimination or under representation.
Each year the award will be presented on the Main Stage at the NAIFA Performance + Purpose Conference. The recipient will receive a recognition award and a complimentary one year membership in the Association.
Award Criteria:
A Diversity Champion presents a unique blend of experience, skills, accomplishments, and other qualities. A nominee must be a member of NAIFA in good standing and have at least five years' experience in the insurance and financial services industry. The Selection Committee will consider the nominee's trailblazing efforts in one or more of the following areas:
- Creates and promotes diverse and inclusive workplaces
- Raises awareness and fosters communication within the financial services industry and the community
- Supports inclusion and encourages diverse individuals to reach their professional goals
- Fosters awareness and a commitment to diversity and inclusion within the NAIFA membership
- Provides insurance and financial services in underserved and diverse markets
An individual may champion the cause of diversity in many ways. An award application should reflect all the efforts and achievements of a nominee. Examples of some of the ways a nominee may champion diversity include:
- Creating or supporting affinity groups, diversity committees or provide leadership in organizations committed to promoting positive action for diversity and inclusion
- Acting as a recruiter, manager or mentor, to promote the inclusion and success of diverse individuals in the profession
- As a speaker, an advocate, or public relations contributor, raise awareness of the issues of equity, diversity and inclusion in the professional community, the NAIFA community, or the community at large
- Pursuing research or study, and/or develop educational programming on issues related to equity, diversity, and /or inclusion
- Engaging a diverse clientele to bring insurance and financial services to underserved markets.

NAIFA Recognizes April as Financial Literacy Awareness Month
Submitted by NAIFA CEO Kevin M. Mayeux, CAE
Dear friends,
A FINRA survey of consumers informs us that nearly two out of every three Americans lack a basic understanding of everyday financial literacy concepts. This dearth of knowledge leaves many families vulnerable, lacking the basic skills to assess financial risk and plan for the future.
For insurance and financial advisors, these are potential clients, many of whom yearn for guidance and a better understanding of what they can do to protect themselves and their families. Providing clients with a basic education in financial literacy is something that NAIFA members are well-equipped to do. It is often the foundation for the lifelong relationships they build with clients.
Research shows that people who work with financial advisors have greater general financial knowledge and better understanding of their personal financial situations. They tend to put away more money for retirement and are more likely to protect their families with life insurance and annuity products.
A survey by the Million Dollar Round Table found that 77 percent of people who have worked with financial advisors have a retirement plan or emergency fund, compared to just 46 percent of those who have gone without professional, personalized financial advice. Half of those who have received guidance from an advisor have also implemented a long-term financial plan, compared to only 19 percent of those with no advisor.
NAIFA is thrilled to promote April as Financial Literacy Awareness Month. Advisors are on the front lines, helping their clients assess their financial needs, meet preparedness goals, and overcome setbacks. Boosting Americans' financial literacy also ranks high among their important contributions.
For more information on improving financial literacy or to find an advisor you can trust, visit NAIFA's consumer website.
Best regards,
Kevin M. Mayeux, CAE Chief Executive Officer

GOVERNMENT ADVOCACY
NAIFA's Mission Aided with IFAPAC and APIC
The core mission of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors is advocacy. There is a common misconception that NAIFA membership dues include all the dollars needed to fund our national and state advocacy efforts. The fact is that NAIFA spends over 25% of its 12 million dollar annual budget to pay for lobbyists and programs to support our advocacy efforts. However, additional funds are needed to help gain access to our elected representatives. The source of these funds are from the Insurance and Financial Advisors Political Action Committee (IFAPAC).
IFAPAC's goal is to help the associations advance the legislative and regulatory interests of the members of NAIFA. While any U.S. citizen can contribute to IFAPAC, only members of NAIFA may be solicited to do so. Contributions must be voluntary. Contributions are not tax deductible for federal income tax purposes. Of approximately 4,600 political action committees registered with the Federal Election Commission, IFAPAC ranks in the top tier. IFAPAC is the largest insurance PAC in the country. In the last election cycle, the national IFAPAC contributed approximately $1.8 million to federal candidates and committees.
Insurance and Financial Advisors Political Involvement Committee (IFAPIC)
Our business is based on building relationships. The world of politics is no different. One of NAIFA's greatest strengths is that we have membership representation in each Congressional District in the country.
It is vitally important that we know which of our members know elected officials and how well they know them. Please click on the link below and complete the legislative contact form:
