Message from the President
Michael W. Halloran, CFP, AEP, ChFC, CLU
NAIFA-Jacksonville President
NAIFA-Jacksonville had a great start to our new year with the "Newer Agent" Panel. Thanks again Burt Beal, Darnell Mote and Keith Gause along with Paul Broome, II who moderated the panel. They gave us a lot of ideas that all of us can use in our practice. Remember that our purpose this year is to give you sales and practice management ideas at each meeting.

At our next Membership Lunch Meeting on October 19th,
Tim Meenan, our
Lobbyist from Tallahassee, will give us updates on the last session of the Florida Legislature and how that will affect us. Tim will also go over the items that will be coming up this session and what we can do to help him to make things better for our clients and our business. On the sales side,
Andy Laino, a regular
Top of the Table Member, will finish up the program giving us some valuable ideas that we can use to help our practice.
Remember that Tim Meenan helped us get two hours of Continuing Education Credit for going to four hours of NAIFA Meetings. So, besides getting
great sales ideas we get some CE Credit too.
We would like to thank APPS, Mass Mutual, Prudential and Rogers Benefit Group for being a monthly programs sponsor. It is easy to feature your company logo and show your support.

If you did not attend the NAIFA-Jacksonville September 21st luncheon meeting, you missed some great sales ideas. The panel of young agents Burt Beal, Keith Gause and Darnell Mote was moderated by the venerable Paul Broome, II.
The panel brought up information on why they have succeeded in the business. One discussion was Social Media and how it can be used. When many of us started in the business we did not know what computers were and now we have them in our phones!
Another idea discussed was making phone calls which are a challenge to many agents. We called it "Dialing For Dollars" but it was hard cold-calling a list of names. I remember an experienced agent told me to make WARM calls by first calling clients, friends and prospects and wishing them a "Happy Birthday".
Collect birth dates, anniversary dates and use these for your warm up calls and you will be charged up for the colder names on your list. Some clients thanked me for sending a birthday card to their wife a week before the date. The wife told her husband "I got a birthday card from our insurance agent" so he was reminded to get a gift.
People appreciate being remembered and it only takes asking "What is your birth date?" to build a list. Try it! It works!

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE:
NAIFA, Industry Respond To Republican Tax Framework
The White House and Republican leaders in Congress today released their "
Unified Framework for Fixing Our Broken Tax Code" proposal for comprehensive tax reform. The nine-page document does not include full legislative details, but establishes principles for the tax writing committees to follow to cut tax rates for individuals and businesses with an "aim to maintain or raise retirement plan participation of workers and the resources available for retirement."
The Save Our Savings coalition, of which NAIFA is a member, issued a response praising the framework's sentiment in favor of protecting retirement savings. "The Coalition, representing millions of American consumers, families and retirees, was heartened to see that the tax reform proposal did not include misguided policies to reduce savings incentives and tax retirement accounts," the release said. However, coalition members remain concerned about proposals by some members of Congress advocating the "Rothification" of retirement accounts, whereby the government would require the immediate taxation of retirement contributions rather than allowing some accounts to be tax-deferred. "Insurance and financial advisors know better than most the importance of the tax code in promoting retirement savings and preparedness among American workers," said NAIFA CEO Kevin Mayeux. "The acknowledgment by the administration and Republican leadership that reform should protect retirement savings and encourage workers to prepare is positive news for advisors and, particularly, for the American public they serve. "We agree with our coalition partners that retirement savers and employers benefit from having access to plans that incentivize savings. Plan designs that make it easier for participants to prepare for retirement, including ROTH and tax-deferred options, will help retirees achieve their retirement goals. "We look forward to reviewing the details when legislative language becomes available, and will work with the administration and members of Congress to ensure that specific measures will have the best possible benefit for advisors, their clients, and the nation as a whole."

GOVERNMENT ADVOCACY
NAIFA's Mission Aided with PAC and PIC
The core mission of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors is advocacy. There is a common misconception that NAIFA membership dues include all the dollars needed to fund our national and state advocacy efforts. The fact is that NAIFA spends over 25% of its 12 million dollar annual budget to pay for lobbyists and programs to support our advocacy efforts. However, additional funds are needed to help gain access to our elected representatives. The source of these funds are from the Insurance and Financial Advisors Political Action Committee (IFAPAC).
IFAPAC's goal is to help the associations advance the legislative and regulatory interests of the members of NAIFA. While any U.S. citizen can contribute to IFAPAC, only members of NAIFA may be solicited to do so. Contributions must be voluntary. Contributions are not tax deductible for federal income tax purposes. Of approximately 4,600 political action committees registered with the Federal Election Commission, IFAPAC ranks in the top tier. IFAPAC is the largest insurance PAC in the country. In the last election cycle, the national IFAPAC contributed approximately $1.8 million to federal candidates and committees.
Insurance and Financial Advisors Political Involvement Committee (IFAPIC)
Our business is based on building relationships. The world of politics is no different. One of NAIFA's greatest strengths is that we have membership representation in each Congressional District in the country.
It is vitally important that we know which of our members know elected officials and how well they know them. Please click on the link below and complete the legislative contact form:
