President's Message

by Susan Dwyer

As the newly-elected president of Jazz in Arizona, I am honored and look forward to serving an organization with such a superb 37-year history as well as extraordinary recent growth. It is nothing short of amazing what has transpired in our first year's operation of The Nash, our own performance and education center. With the help of our members, volunteers, board, sponsors and angels, we are continuing to build an incredibly diverse community of jazz musicians, students, educators and audiences that thrive on the joy of jazz music.

From October 10th through 13th, we celebrated the First Anniversary of The Nash...and what a celebration it was, with musical performances featuring jazz luminaries Randy Brecker, Javon Jackson, George Cables, George Mraz and Lewis Nash. We had an incredible house party with the Lewis Nash Trio; 2 concerts with the quintet at The Nash; an awesome tribute concert to 5 great pianists we lost this past year, featuring Charles Lewis, Beth Lederman and Mike Kocour; and a Sunday brunch with the Bad Cactus Brass Band and Cajun food to top it off.   In particular, this celebration was made possible through the generosity of our new community partner, Alliance Bank of Arizona, Stu and Nancy Seifer and JAMN Jazz; KJZZ; Lakeshore Music; The Downtown Hyatt Regency; our 14 patrons; plus our 22 amazing volunteers who worked more than 145 hours over those 4 days.

Most exciting of all is the number of new friends and supporters encountered over the course of these celebrations, including jazz impresario and Newport Jazz Festival founder, George Wein, who made a generous donation to The Nash. This speaks volumes for the reputation we are building from coast to coast as a new model for jazz performance and education with a unique ability to engage a diverse community--especially young musicians and audiences.

My personal commitment is to spreading the word about The Nash throughout the business, education and arts communities. I hope to continue to foster collaborations and enhance those we have with ASU, the Maricopa Community Colleges, Arizona School of the Arts, Phoenix Center for The Arts, KJZZ, Spot 127, MIM, Illinois Jacquet Foundation, Lakeshore Music and many more.

Please continue to check out the incredibly robust and growing calendar of performances coming up at The Nash at thenash.org. PLUS individual jazz lessons are about to launch at The Nash, instructed by many of the top jazz educators in the State. You'll also find information on lessons, art shows, and other educational programs on The Nash website.

I look forward to your continued support for Jazz in AZ/The Nash as we continue to write a brilliant chapter in the future of jazz in our State and beyond. Please also feel free to contact me to share your thoughts and suggestions about our future.

Alice Tatum is an award-winning and critically acclaimed singer who has been a fixture on the Phoenix music scene for 30 years.  Alice has extraordinary stage presence and a voice to match, characterized by exceptional range and emotion. While Alice may be better known for her contemporary repertoire, jazz is clearly her first love, which is evident in her memorable interpretations of jazz standards.

As a performer, Alice has shared the stage with greats such as Michael McDonald, Tom Scott, The Righteous Brothers, Bonnie Raitt, Alice Cooper and Nancy Wilson.  She has also worked with noted producer Don Costa, as well as entertainers Flip Wilson, Paul Anka and Merv Griffin.  Alice's voice has been heard on numerous national commercials and on film, as well as on her own three CD projects.

Nov. 2013

By Patricia Myers

Those who doubt the future of jazz simply need to listen to the big bands of Young Sounds of Arizona, and become aware of other local and international news of young jazz musicians.

Locally, the Phoenix Musicians Union Local 586 AFM allocates scholarship funds to Young Sounds of Arizona, the youth honor band (audition-selected members) established in 1971 and subsequently supported by the union.

A new YSA scholarship to honor drummer-band leader Dave Cook, who died in August, will be launched at a celebration of life from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, presented by his daughters, Davanna and Dayna in Kottner Hall at the Union headquarters in east Phoenix. All jazz musicians are invited to perform in a lineup that at this writing includes Papa John DeFrancsco on B3 organ, Big Jim Henry on trumpet-flugelhorn and Paul Anderson on sax. Contributions to all YSA scholarships may be mailed to the union, 1202 E. Oak St., Phoenix 85006.

For other student musicians, the third annual Tom Miles Scholarship benefit in September added enough funds to designate it as an endowed scholarship at Mesa Community College. The event was organized by Jerry Donato and Doug Robinson, and hosted by David Valdivia, owner of Los Compadres. An enthusiastic audience heard three bands led by Valdivia, Auggie Mendoza and Jack Radavich.  A trombone scholarship at MCC that memorializes the legendary trombonist Al Grey was established in 2000 by Don Miller and the Paradise Valley Jazz Party. The Nadine Jansen Scholarship also is designated for Young Sounds, funds still to be awarded.

On the national scene, Melissa Aldana made history in

September by becoming the first female instrumentalist to win the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, held at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.  The 24-year-old tenor saxophonist took home the $25,000 scholarship and guaranteed contract with Concord Records. Aldana, who was raised in Chile, has released two albums on the Inner Circle label, was a second-generation contestant: Her father, Marco Aldana, participated in the 1991 competition.

The 2013 saxophone judging panel consisted of Branford Marsalis, Jane Ira Bloom, Jimmy Heath, Wayne Shorter and Bobby Watson. Past winners of the Monk competition include vocalist Gretchen Parlato, who performed in September as part of the ongoing Lakeshore Music series at the Tempe Center for the Arts.

BuzzlineThe local scene is bustling with new venues and added nights, as the fall-winter season shifts into high gear.

First item: Three longtime Valley favorites have been booked at OC Seven at the Scottsdale Resort and Athletic Club, on Indian Bend near Hayden Road. This venue has a dance floor, low stage and restaurant menu. Owner Bob Hing chose Danny Long to perform from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Fridays, Nov. 1 and 8. On Saturdays in December, vocalist Margo Reed will perform 6:30-9:30 p.m. with pianist-vocalist Judy Roberts. Other November weeks will feature vocalist Alice Tatum with pianist Rachael Gold on Friday, Nov. 15 and Saturdays, Nov. 23 & 30, also the Jan Sandwich Duo on Friday, Nov. 9 and 16.

The Reed-Roberts duo will perform from 8 to 11 p.m. Sundays at Kazimierz World Wine Bar in downtown Scottsdale, formerly the site of Jazz in AZ monthly parties. Roberts and vocalist Renee Patrick have returned to Malee's on Main from 6-9 p.m. Mondays, and also will perform together in the lounge of Sassi restaurant in north Scottsdale from 6-9:30 p.m. Fridays (except Nov. 15), and also New Year's Eve, Dec. 31. Beth Lederman will play solo piano at Sassi from 6-9:30 p.m. Saturday Nov. 2 and Dec. 7.

Roberts also now performs 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays at L'Amore Restaurant and Bar on Lincoln Drive in east Phoenix. She also will perform with saxophonist Tony Vacca from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 5 for the resumed weekly Tuesday series at the Mad Hatter Brewpub in Tempe, presented by Stu Siefer.

Second item: Danny Long also performs weekly at  Marcello's Pasta Grill in south Tempe from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays, joined by his daughter,  Trish Longo Dwyer, on scatting duets, plus his brother, Peter Longo, on electric bass.

Third item: A special new venue marks a rebirth on the original site of the legendary Century Sky Room that now is Caf Eleven Forty (per its location at 1140 E. Washington Street.). The Raul Yanez Trio performs 8 to 11 p.m. Fridays, with other bands on Saturdays. The restaurant owned by Teaseman Spencer has a cozy feel with comfortable seating and a diverse menu. One odd element is that it has only a men's restroom, with the women's facility across the patio at the former Bobby C's/Century Pub, which has been restyled with a dance floor and DJ music. (See Venues listing in this issue for details.)

Thelonious Monk competition winner Melissa Aldana will be among the 19 musicians performing March 21-23 for the 37th annual Paradise Valley Jazz Party, produced for the 37th consecutive year by Don Miller, one of nine Jazz in AZ founders and a past president. The other 18 musicians are Claudio Roditi and Lou Soloff, trumpets; Bill Easley and Jerry Donato, saxophones; Wycliffe Gordon, trombone; Bruce Forman, guitar-vocals; Roger Kellaway, Bill Cunliffe, Armand Boatman and Michael Kocour, piano; Nicki Parrott, Rodney Whitaker, Tom Wakeling, bass; Lewis Nash, Herlin Riley, Jacob Eary and Pete Swan, drums; and Melissa Morgan, Bay area vocalist.

Jazz News:  The Phoenix Musicians Union is extending its 2012 Centennial Year live-music events, which are open to the public at 1202 E. Oak St., Phoenix 85005 (602-245-8838). Members Jerry Donato and Jack Radavich teamed up to organize concerts on Nov. 3, 5, 10 and 24 that will include two top-name tenor saxophonists, Pete Christlieb of Los Angeles and John Tendy from New York City, as well as the Fred Forney Quartet and the Cook tribute. (See Calendar listings for details.) These events remind me of the years that I was privileged to attend the Union's annual events that would featuring numerous bands playing various styles of music. Most memorable were the ones staged at the two-level JD's on south Scottsdale Road near the river bed, going back and forth to hear big-band jazz on one floor and country-western on another. A very hip concept!

Forney's quintet performed a sizzling concert at Sacred Grounds coffeehouse last spring that included a vintage Prince Shell arrangement of Thad Jones' "Ain't Nuthin' Nu." Forney told me he performed that when he was in the Pendulum band led by drummer Lewis Nash in the late 1970s.That instrumental is on Nash's 2012 quintet album, "The Highest Mountain" (Planetworks). Years ago, Shell's charts were lovingly archived by guitarist Ted Goddard to assure continuing performances of these incomparable works. The challenging concert repertoire also included Miles Davis' "Flamenco Sketches" from the 1959 "Birth of the Cool" album, which Forney dedicated to recently deceased jazz musicians.

Former Phoenix drummer Wes Anderson is on San Francisco vocalist Mary Stallings' new release, "But Beautiful" (HighNote) in the rhythm section with pianist Eric Reed and bassist Mike Gurrola, according to a CD review in the September issue of Jazz Times magazine. Anderson now lives and performs in Los Angeles, and is a member of Disneyland's "Five and Dime" band.

A celebration of life for Jo Wittens, a lifetime member of Jazz in AZ who died Sept. 19, featured music by Mark Young's Jazz Poets, one of her favorite local combos that often played at Winfield's Caf at First Baptist Church of Scottsdale.

Bassist Jennifer Leitham, who performed a duet concert with Judy Roberts at The Nash earlier this year, has been honored with a Community Leader Angel Award at the 2013 Angels of Change event, benefiting Children's Hospital Los Angeles Division of Adolescent Medicine Center for TransYouth Health and Development in California.

Three of my most recent jazz-concert reviews posted to AllAboutJazz.com include The Nash first-anniversary celebration's four events in October, via this link: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=45700

Guitarists Petersen and Sorenson to pick
at Holiday Jazz in AZ party, Dec. 15, 3-5 pm @ The Nash

Two Valley-favorite guitarists - Jack Petersen and Stan Sorenson - will join musical forces for the Jazz in AZ holiday party on Sunday, December 15th.

One of the most respected jazz guitarists in the world today, Jack Petersen made his mark not only as a player, but also as an educator of extraordinary influence on a generation of young musicians. His professional performance associations include Billy Taylor, Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, Dave Brubeck, Herb Ellis, Stan Kenton, Rufus Reid, Milt Hinton, Buddy DeFranco, Clark Terry, Nancy Wilson, Lou Marini, Randy Brecker, Doc Severinsen, Henry Mancini, Ellis Marsalis, Michel Legrande and the many more.

Stan Sorenson, also known for his playing and teaching prowess,  was inspired by a Herb Ellis recording his parents owned, and began guitar lessons at the age of eight. After seven years of private lessons, the Phoenix native began his professional career performing on the guitar in an accordion-based pop/polka band and an all-original jazz/rock band.

Stan has performed locally and internationally, working with such greats as Nancy Wilson, Jimmy Smith, Rosemary Clooney, Vic Damone, Jeffrey Osborne, The Fifth Dimension, Joey DeFrancesco and many others.

At the December Jazz in AZ party, you can expect to hear both jazz standards and uniquely spirited renditions of holiday favorites.
