"Having such a distinguished line-up of musicians and exciting events is a fitting way to celebrate our 1st Anniversary," says Susan Dwyer, the new president of Jazz in Arizona, which operates the non-profit venue. "It is nothing short of amazing what has transpired in our first year. The Nash is creating an incredibly diverse community of jazz musicians, students, educators and audiences that is thriving on the joy of jazz music," Dwyer explains.

The Nash has regularly-scheduled performances every Friday and Saturday night; a jam session every Sunday evening, monthly parties, special events including Latin Jazz concerts, plus big band nights and seasonal performances by the ASU and Maricopa Community College jazz departments - more than 200 performances in all. A growing number of educational workshops, clinics and private lessons add to the profound impact of The Nash in our community.

"When you come to the Sunday jam session and see a room packed week-after-week with people enjoying musicians--from teen students to world-class pros--spontaneously making music together, you get an immediate sense of what The Nash is about. It brings people together, fosters an appreciation for jazz and provides the ultimate learning experience for student musicians. The Nash is a magical place; and we've only just begun," Dwyer concludes.

Sept. 2013

By Patricia Myers

Summer traditionally is known as "The Slow Season" in most major cities, including Phoenix and Paris. From what I know and have seen, au contraire. Live jazz was plentiful in both metropolitan areas, with only a few venues en vacances (on summer break) in July and/or August. That speaks well for the health of live jazz in the 21st century.
My annual two months in the City of Light were filled with places to go and musicians to hear, from outdoor parks and in front of city hall to the banks of the Seine and crowded underground caveaux du jazz. The aural fare from local and touring American and European musicians was varied and satisfying. Paris audiences are attentive and respectful, and vigorously show their appreciation of the art of jazz, America's music gift to the world. Myers_Patricia Paris 2013
As always, the big names played the big halls of Paris, among them Arizona resident George Benson, on tour for his recent release, Inspiration: A Tribute To Nat King Cole (Concord, 2013). Benson was the 10-page cover story with vintage photos for JAZZ-Jazzman magazine's July issue. (I'm so glad I've learned to read French!)
I was thrilled to hear and review jazz luminaries such as pianists Cedar Walton (the month before his death of blood disorder) and Cyrus Chestnut, as well as saxophonist Craig Handy. I heard local and touring musicians in a variety of settings, from a Django Reinhardt tribute led by Russian guitarist Frederic Belinsky in a small church not far from Notre Dame, to Hugh Masekela in a botanical park, to American expat saxophonist Scott Hamilton (now living in Tuscany) at Le Caveau de la Huchette with my all-time favorite French pianist, Philippe Duchemin. (I recently reviewed his newest CD, Swing & Strings, featuring his trio and a string quartet, for AllAboutJazz.com).

Here's the Paris concerts review link: www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.phpid=45130&page=1

My annual Paris Jazz Diary summer overview will be posted later this year at that website, as well as a That website has archived my reviews of metro-Phoenix concerts by touring musicians at the Musical Instrument Museum, Mesa Art Center and Tempe Center for the Arts.

Jazz Buzz: What promises to be the biggest season-restart event will be the afternoon of Sunday, Sept. 8, when the 80th birthday of Charles Lewis will be celebrated with a giant "woodshed" or jam session from 3:30 to 5:45 p.m. at The Nash in Phoenix. Beth Dore and Shannon Wallace are organizing the event, open to the public.

Danny Long fans were shocked to learn that he is no longer performing at Remington's on Tuesday and Thursdays. Management made the decision to end his 22-year booking there, which set an Arizona record for both longevity and a loyal fan base.   Judy Roberts also did not have her five-night booking renewed.

The good news is that Danny has a new East Valley gig from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays at Marcello's Pasta Grill-Fine Italian Dining1701 E. Warner Road (at McClintock), Tempe, 480-831-0800, marcellospastagrill.com.  He'll have a trio with Bob Lashier on bass and a third musician to be named. Marcello's has been open in south Tempe since 1995. Judy will be back in late September with Renee Patrick at Malee's on Main in Scottsdale on Mondays, as well as resuming other gigs, after her return from numerous bookings in Chicago, at the Monterey Jazz Festival and Newport Beach, Calif.

The annual Tom Miles Annual Scholarship Benefit for jazz students at Mesa Community College will be presented from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, at LosCompadres. Organized and led by pianist-owner David Valdivia, it will feature Devon Bridgewater on trumpet and violin, Pete Pancrazi on guitar, Victor Kottner on bass and Tim Downs on drums, plus many guest musicians. Donation is $20 and includes a buffet at the restaurant,2350 W. Northern Ave., Phoenix, 602-864-0258.

In the West Valley, Beth Dore continues to make the Thursday night all-ages jam session a success at JiveMind in downtown Glendale (see Venues listing for details). September sessions have a Latin theme, led by the Marcos Crego Cuban-Jazz Potpourri (Crego-piano, Thomas Williams-Bob Lashier-Dallas Huber-bass, Emerson Laffey-drums, Jesse Parker-percussion, with guest vocalist Mercy Bermudez on Sept. 12. Jean Bayus has three series this fall, the first starting in September at Sun City Grand, then events in October at Peoria Center for the Performing Arts and Westbrook Village. (See Venues listing for details.) A star-studded benefit for Dennis Rowland is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, at the Herberger Theatre in Phoenix. Performing will be saxophonist Tom Scott, pianist Shelly Berg, bassist Chuck Berghofer, vocalists Monica Mancini (Henry's daughter) and Francine Reed, drummer Gregg Fields (with Count Basie when Dennis sang with that orchestra), bassists Mike King and drummer Greg Warner, with more to be added. (See Calendar for details.)

The jazz and blues scene in the metro-Phoenix area was the subject of an extensive article in the September issue of Phoenix Magazine, written by Niki D'Andrea. I was interviewed for the historical perspective and current activity; Joel Goldenthal, Jazz in AZ executive director, was interviewed about The Nash; Blaise Lantana, KJZZ radio music director, provided information about the station's programming.

Musicians' NewsLocal jazz fans are mourning the death of pivotal Valley jazz drummer-band leader Dave Cook, who transitioned from Prescott on Aug. 30. Dave conceived and led the Vanguard jazz combo and the Atlantis Big Band, as well as other aggregations.

For 10 years, he led the legendary Monday night jam session at the Melody Lounge in Tempe, where touring musicians often stopped by to sit in, including Wynton Marsalis, as well as hometown-cum-international stars Lewis Nash and Joey DeFrancesco. Dave also led jam sessions at "The Vee" in south Phoenix. Dave's bands regularly played arrangements of the late pianist-composer Prince Shell, whose oeuvres were archived by guitarist Ted Goddard for posterity.

A celebration of life is tentatively scheduled for Sunday afternoon Nov. 3, organized by family members and musicians. Dave, recipient of a JiA Lifetime Achievement Award, would have been 80 on Nov.  5.

Saxophonist Jerry Donato is host of a new online radio show at http://radiophoenix.org from 9 to 10 p.m. Wednesdays, repeating each following Monday from 9 to 10 p.m.  "Professional Musicians of Arizona (Radio Hour)" launched on July 31 for a 13-week run, and possible continuation. For more than a year, Donato has been the organizer of the monthly Centennial music series at the Musicians Union Hall, featuring various genres of music played by local ensembles. Tom Coulson, who has been host of a weekly Thursday online jazz program for the past several years, assisted with arrangements for the added show. Tom has had guest DJs on his own Thursday-night plot, such as pianist John Mueller and me.

Francine Reed emailed from Atlanta that she completed a tour-week summer tour in New England, then resumed her seasonal performance in Seattle with Teatro Zanzini, a Cirque du Soleil-type production in which she is a featured act. She wrote that her former Phoenix pianist, Tim Ray, went to hear her in a Boston blues club. Fans take note: Francine will be at the Rhythm Room with "that old gang of mine" on Sunday, Oct. 13, performing a benefit for St. Mary's Food Bank with a band led by her longtime bassist-vocalist Andy Gonzales.

Final BarPaul Smith, 92, pianist (Ella Fitzgerald), July 3 in Los Angeles; George Duke, 67, of leukemia Aug. 5 in Los Angeles; Cedar Walton, 79, pianist-composer (performed in October 2012 with drummer Lewis Nash to inaugurate The Nash Center), Aug. 19 in Brooklyn; Marian McPartland, 95, pianist (NPR "Piano Jazz" radio show), Aug. 20 of natural causes in Long Island, NYC; Dave Cook, drummer-leader of Vanguard/Atlantis Big Band, for 10 years led Melody Lounge Monday jam sessions, 79, Aug. 30 in Prescott.

Nov. 6 Benefit Concert to Support Dennis Rowland's Comeback from Stroke

By Joel Goldenthal

In 2000, the Herberger Theater Center created the Performing and Broadcast Arts Hall of Fame to honor Arizona natives or residents who have achieved national or international acclaim in the field of the performing arts and/or broadcast communications - to acknowledge and immortalize individuals who have made our lives brighter through their contribution to the arts, and provide an example for aspiring artists and journalists of the greatness to which they can aspire. The short list includes Hugh Downs, Pat McMahon, Leslie Nielsen, Alice Cooper...and Dennis Rowland. Rowland_Dennis 150x150 (4)

Phoenix theatergoers know Dennis from productions of "Blue" (with Leslie Uggams), "Little Shop of Horrors" ("Feed me, Seymour!"),"Blues in the Night," "Chicago" and "Once on This Island." Music-lovers around the world know Dennis from his seven glorious years as vocalist with the Count Basie Orchestra, and his tours in recent years to Germany, Russia, England, Spain, Portugal, Scandinavia, the Czech Republic and Croatia.

Locally, Dennis is widely known for his music: Motown shows, appearances with the Extreme Decibel Big Band, ten-year run at Kazimierz World Wine Bar in Scottsdale and many more magnificent performances too numerous to mention. And his voice has been documented in Concord Records "Rhyme, Rhythm & Reason," "Get Here" and "Now Dig This," a celebration of '50s and early '60s Miles Davis music. Other recordings include the inaugural project "Blonde" for the Playboy Jazz label, Joe Sample's "Sample This," and Frank Foster's Loud Minority Band recording "We Do It Diff'rent," as well as the Basie Band's Grammy award-winning record "On the Road."

But why does this Detroit native, Phoenix resident since 1987, evoke such appreciation and adoration? Of course, there's his rich commanding voice, winning smile, humor and bigger-than-life persona. But the answer lies beyond that: in the breadth and depth of Dennis's 25-year involvement in our community - from the classrooms of inner city schools where he's done everything from substitute teach the 3 Rs to stepping in as a band director, and providing guidance, inspiration and mentorship to so many young people through music clinics and lectures, group and private lessons and concert performances. And there's his generosity in lending his musical talents to many charitable causes.

So when a near-fatal stroke and brain hemorrhage on December 19, 2012 compromised Dennis's language center, severely impairing his ability to communicate, and silencing the lyrics that have brought joy to so many of us, we as a community suffered a heartfelt blow.

As part of the team of folks who have been working with Dennis in his recovery, I can tell you that it has not been easy. The damage to pathways in his brain is making it a severe challenge for Dennis to access those years of stored lyrics; he is having to learn how to form many sounds again. For perspective, it took weeks of speech therapy before Dennis could say the word "Blues" - ironic and unfathomable for a guy who has spent decades moving us singing, "Come back, baby, come back." The words "Fly me to the moon" are a work in progress.

But the good news is that the words are still in there, and that Dennis's musicality is still intact, evidenced by his remarkable ability to scat sing (using sounds rather than words). Dennis's indomitably positive spirit, faith and determination to resume his career and his community work are nothing short of awe-inspiring.

The star-studded benefit for Dennis Rowland at the Herberger Theater on Wednesday, November 6 at 7:30 p.m. - including Monica Mancini, Francine Reed, Shelly Berg, Tom Scott, Gregg Field and many more - provides an opportunity to celebrate Dennis and to raise much-needed funds for his living expenses and recovery.

Tickets can be purchased online (herbergertheater.org), by phone (602-252-8497) or in person at the Herberger Theater Center Box Office, 222 E. Monroe St. in downtown Phoenix.  In addition, a trustee-administered account is accepting community donations to help with Dennis' living expenses, health care and rehabilitative therapy.

Donations can be made at Dennis' website: CLICK HERE or go to: http://www.dennisrowland.com/fund.html

Our hope is clear: "Come back, Dennis; come back!"
