"Know Civil Rights" Programs in January
In January we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Though the holiday was observed for the first time in 1986, it wasn't until 2000 that it was officially observed by all 50 states. This January we will look at Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy as well America's pursuit for civil rights across race, gender, and cultures. Hear from presenters on the passing of the 14th and 19th Amendments, explore the role of sports and art in protest, trace the progression of LGBTQ rights, and more. Find the full slate of programs here.
New Writing Workshops in Partnership with Caldera
Writing can be a lonely activity, but often times inspiration can come from working with a group. Caldera and Deschutes Public Library continue their partnership to bring dynamic writing workshops to Central Oregon.  Caldera Artists in Residence (AiR) will host three workshops this winter, one each at the Sisters Library, the Downtown Bend Library, and the East Bend Library. Workshops are free but space is limited and registration is required.

Library Fun
Our thanks to Michael "The Train Man" Lavrich, who ran his model trains at the library in December for the 18th year. This beloved family tradition is made possible by The Train Man's generosity with his time and his trains; set-up alone takes five days (find a time lapse video here). Thank you, Train Man!
