"Know Trails" this Month at Your Library
Enacted by congress in 1968, the National Trail System Act established a system of trails to encourage the preservation and enjoyment of public lands and historic resources of our nation. Join us this November as we learn about trails of all kinds. Hear from a Triple Crown hiker about her adventures on the iconic long trails, get essential hiking tips from Deschutes County Search and Rescue, learn about trail-blazers like Florence Nightingale, explore the Camino de Santiago with a dedicated pilgrim, and more during these free lectures and presentations. Find the full schedule of events here.
Know More About Día de los Muertos
Join us at the Downtown Bend Library on November 5 at 2:00 p.m. when we learn all about Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. Come hear about the traditions, help build an ofrenda, and enjoy music and dance performances from  Renee Gonzalez and the students from Bear Creek Folk Ballet Group; guitarist Miguel de Alonso; Brad Porterfield on guitarra de son; cellist Billy Mickleson; and vocalist Yolanda Alicia.
Second Sunday with OSU-Cascades
Deschutes Public Library welcomes TC Tolbert to the Downtown Bend Library on November 12 for Second Sunday, the library's monthly celebration of the written word.
Tolbert was recently named Tucson Arizona's Poet Laureate, and in that post will serve a two-year term promoting poetry in Tuscon, advancing literary education in schools, and bringing poetry to people who have limited access to the literary arts. Tolbert is also Core Faculty in the OSU-Cascades Low Residency MFA Program.
Author! Author! Kicks Off with Michael Chabon; Mary Roach Up Next
Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon spoke in Bend on October 25 as the first writer in the 2017/18 Author! Author! literary series. He read new, never-heard-before work and took questions from the audience. Before his talk in Bend he spent time with cadets at the Oregon Youth Challenge Program. Money raised from ticket sales helps fund outreach programs, like visits to OYC, that aren't funded through taxes. Up next in the series is science writer and humorist Mary Roach on January 27. Tickets are $25 for general admission and are available online here
