Geriatric Onset Ideopathic Epilepsy
By Jay McDonnell, DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVIM (Neurology)

When older pets (age 10 year or older) have a seizure, the first thought that the owners typically have is, "This has to be a tumor or something else bad. This must be a death knell for my pet."

I'd like to assure you: This isn't necessarily true. In my practice I see cases every week of geriatric pets having seizures. When we do a work-up with MRI and spinal tap, there are often NO terminal conditions present. MORE>>

Welcome Cheryl,

Our New Practice Manager

Dr. Jay McDonnell is pleased to announce that Cheryl A. has joined Veterinary Neurology and Imaging of the Chesapeake as the practice manager. Cheryl, who has 24 years of experience in the veterinary field, previously was the practice manager for a large companion animal and equine veterinary practice in Easton, Maryland for 15 years.

A native of the Eastern Shore, Cheryl has always been a "pet person." Her first job was cleaning kennels at a veterinary hospital. She worked as a veterinary assistant, practice receptionist, vet tech and office manager, before becoming a certified veterinary practice manager. Since starting on VNoC/VIoC in July, Cheryl says, "I'm really enjoying having the opportunity to manage two specialty practices, including one with two locations." MORE>>
Dr. John Rossmeisl's canine glioma study offers a unique, cutting-edge therapeutic technique for treating these tumors. Using an implanted catheter, a molecularly-targeted cytotoxin is delivered directly to the tumor site, with the aim of sparing healthy brain tissue while destroying the cancer cells.

To be considered for enrollment, dogs must already have a full neurological workup, including an MRI that shows evidence of a single telencephalic intra-axial mass lesion consistent with a glioma.

Dr. Rossmeisl is an associate professor of neurology and neurosurgery in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. This clinical trial is a collaboration between the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine and the Thomas K. Hearn Brain Tumor Research Center at the Wake Forest School of Medicine.

If you have a patient that qualifies, contact Mindy Quigley, Clinical Trials Coordinator at
(540) 231-1363 or email [email protected]

Granulomatous Meningoencephalitis, or GME, is among the most common causes of inflammatory disease in dogs. This noninfectious process is considered to be idiopathic in nature and is often thought to have an immune-mediated cause. GME produces inflammatory lesions along the white matter tracts of the cerebrum and can also affect the cerebellum and brainstem.

This disease process often has a rapid onset but can be drawn out over a long period of time depending on the originating location. Cases of GME present very similarly to a wide range of neurologic conditions with symptoms including head tilt, nystagmus, unsteady gait, depression, and seizures. MORE>>
