April 25 marked the one-year anniversary of the 2015 earthquakes that struck central Nepal, affecting more than 6.6 million people across the region. USAID and its partners have been working to help communities recover from the widespread damage and destruction of the disaster, but there is still much more work to be done. What’s your solution for keeping people free of the mosquito-borne Zika virus? USAID’s Combating Zika and Future Threats Grand Challenge begins accepting pitches tomorrow. Winning ideas to prevent, detect and respond to Zika and other infectious diseases will receive up to $30 million in funding to develop promising solutions.

Empowering workers three years after Rana Plaza tragedy


The 2013 Rana Plaza collapse claimed the lives of more than 1,100 garment factory workers. As the world’s second-largest clothing exporter, the rights of poor workers are often overlooked in Bangladesh. But, with the support of USAID, women like Shahara Aktar are joining trade unions and fighting for rights, including regular pay and leave. Read more and watch Sharhara’s video story.
