This Friday, January 16th, at 9:30 am we will meet at the southern end of the Grassy Creek section of the developing Stone Mountain Trail. This is located west 1/2 mile from the intersection stoplight of Highway 21 and Poplar Springs Road (North of Elkin, between State Road and Elkin).
Directions: Drive North on I-77, across the Yadkin River. Take the next left turn off for Highway 21 North. You will go by the exit for CC Camp road and go on to the next light which is the intersection mentioned above. Turn left (you'll pass by the ABC store) and follow the road to Brookfall Dairy Road (straight through the next light. You will travel a little over a 1/2 mile (past the old Wall-Mart Store) to just beyond the address on a mailbox 330 Brookfall Dairy Road. Park along the road, but off the road! The section starts on the right hand side of the road going into the woods across from a tobacco field. We will meet there at 9:15 am and go into the woods at 9:30 am (north a 1 1/2 mile).
The plan is to work through lunch into the middle of the afternoon, so bring a lunch or snack, gloves, safety glasses and water! I'll bring the EVTA trail building tools, but shovels, hoes, rakes, axes (for use in dirt) are the tools of the day. We will be putting a foot bed (mile in length) in this section where a rough cut was done last Fall. This a near level area, so there will be very little deep digging. We need to clear off the "duff", top soil and get to the sub-soil or mineral soil, for 30" wide foot bed.
There will be another day in February on a weekend and I will email in early February. If anyone has a EVTA fire rake from the late Fall work day on Wells Knob when the culverts were installed, I would like to have it back so it can be sharpened and prepared for 2015 trail work.
