How to be a Great Leader:
22 Qualities in 3 Minutes

We have a lot of leaders in our world, but do we have a lot of great leaders? Of course, your answer to that question depends on how you define "great." Our video today goes out of its way to do just that by listing 22 qualities that proven leaders have cultivated within themselves and applied to their work.
It's the first Friday in July, and you know what that means.  It's time once again for the Chamber's one-and-only "non-event."

In case you haven't had a chance to join us yet, First Friday is a casual, post-work gathering at one of our member restaurants with specially priced appetizers, drink specials, and more. And by casual, we mean no program, no speaker, no registration, no meeting, and no real purpose other than to wind down and hang out.  Now in its 5th month, First Friday is a big hit with Chamber m embers who seem to really enjoy the opportunity to socialize while being off-the-clock and leaving all pretense of business at the office.

We'd like to invite you to come on over to Damon's Grill & Sports Bar this evening from 5 to 7. Feel free to bring a friend, co-worker, or spouse. Damon's will have some great appetizer and drink specials along with gift card giveaways and other surprises.   And there's no charge and no need to RSVP - because, you know, it's not really an event. See you there.

Our Summer Gift Card Shopping Spree Continues...
...with a special thank you to Vapor Jet!

Last week, the Chamber announced that it would be purchasing gift cards from its members in order to replenish the supply used through the year for door prizes and giveaways at various events.

The response so far has been overwhelming, and we'd like to thank everyone who has participated.  A special shout-out goes to Vapor Jet Professional Cleaning for donating over $100 worth of gift cards - a great addition to the growing selection.  The gift-card shopping spree continues, and if you missed last week's "In The Know," here's how it works: For every $10 gift card that is donated by your business, the Chamber will match that donation and purchase another $10 gift card from you.  That's it. Pretty simple, right?

Please mail your gift cards to the Chamber offices at 630 Market Street, Steubenville, Ohio 43952, and we'll reciprocate upon receipt. And if you're not a business that offers gift cards, please consider supporting your favorite member restaurant, retailer, or other business by purchasing and sending one in from them. We'll match those as well.

Governor's Vetoes May Set Up Showdown with General Assembly

With only minutes to spare before the beginning of the new fiscal year, Gov. John Kasich signed House Bill 49, the state’s biennial budget bill, just before midnight on Friday. However, he did so only after using his line-item veto powers to strike 47 separate provisions from the bill.

Unfortunately, two items the Ohio Chamber had requested he veto were not among the 47: the provision that eliminates the important taxpayer right to make a direct appeal to the Ohio Supreme Court from a decision of the Board of Tax Appeals, and the provision that allows up to two percent of the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation and Industrial Commission budgets to be transferred to the General Revenue Fund.

Further, one of the 47 was a veto of a provision supported by the Ohio Chamber, which would have clarified that sales of automatic data processing, computer services, electronic information services, and electronic publishing services are not taxable under the sales tax when they are being provided primarily to deliver, receive, or use another, nontaxable service.

Here's How to Modernize NAFTA

As one of the very last to speak in a three-day, 143-witness hearing on NAFTA modernization objectives organized by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, my comments on Thursday’s closing panel will be brief. My appearance will come well after the point when everything has been said—but not quite everyone has said it.

However, it is critical for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to speak out on the top trade issue of the day. As the nation’s largest business organization, the Chamber directly represents hundreds of thousands of companies of every size, every state, and every sector — manufacturers, services, and agriculture.

In fact, we represent the interests of three million companies through our nationwide federation of thousands of state and local chambers of commerce and sectoral associations.

This year’s debate over the NAFTA, with all of its ups and downs, has cast the views of the U.S. business and agriculture communities toward the agreement in stark relief.

Today in History

-  July 7, 1928  -

The Chillicothe Baking Company in Chillicothe, Missouri, became the first to sell sliced bread, describing it as "a fine loaf sold a better way." Iowa inventor Otto Rohwedder had struggled to gain interest in his bread-slicing machine up until this point, and initially, sliced bread was met with great skepticism. Many bakers thought people wouldn't care whether their bread was sliced or not, while others were concerned about it going stale faster. By 1930, these concerns were allayed, as customers couldn't get enough of sliced bread. For more about the history of sliced bread, check out this article
