Dear friends,

There are two things I can't wait for you to experience in our upcoming production of after the quake. The first is company member Matt Bowdren acting like a giant frog. The second is the magic, romance, humor, and honesty with which Haruki Murakami tells these stories of recovery and reinvention after disasters, both natural and personal.

In listening to parts of this play in rehearsals, I feel like I'm taking a page out of Joe and Cindy's theatrical playbook. The sentiments in lines like "The whole terrible fight occurred in the area of imagination. It is there that we experience our victories and our defeats," and "A real frog is exactly what I am. A product neither of metaphor nor allusion nor deconstruction nor sampling nor any other such complex process, I am a genuine frog," seem like pillars of The Rogue's approach to theatre--an approach dependent upon imagination and authenticity. But these lines also seem custom-made for you, our audience, a group well-accustomed to imagining a dog instead of Joe McGrath, or a snake instead of a puppet.

Please join us for a genuinely imaginative evening of theatre. At the most, you'll ponder the great questions Murakami poses in these short story adaptations. At the least, you can hear Matt Bowdren "ribbit."

The Rogue Theatre
presents

after the quake, by Haruki Murakami; adapted for the stage by Frank Galati
based on "Honey Pie" and "Superfrog Saves Tokyo"
from the novel "after the quake"

Directed by Nic Adams

 June 19-30, 2013

Thursday-Saturday 7:30 P.M.,
Sunday 2:00 P.M.
plus a Wednesday 7:30 P.M. performance on June 19, 2013

In this adaptation of two of Haruki Murakami's short stories, Frank Galati has fashioned a play that follows the lives of characters struggling with the aftermath of the 1995 earthquake in Kobe, Japan, that nearly destroyed the city. Rich in dreamlike imagery and haunting in its evocation of survival in the wake of terrible disaster, after the quake makes masterful use of storytelling to reveal and explore our primal fears.

The cast of after the quake features
Matt Bowdren, Larisa Cota, Marissa Garcia, Javan Nelson and Owen Virgin
