Wednesday, January 27th
from 7:00-9:00 PM
Authors Scott Noelle and Peter Gray will share their insights on parenting and self-directed learning
Parenting coach and author Scott Noelle  will lead a discussion for parents of BSLC students -- and any parents who are considering BSLC for their kids or are interested in liberated learning and its principles and practice -- to identify parenting strategies that enhance their kids' self-directed education.

Also joining us will be Boston College professor Peter Gray, Ph.D., who has been a guest of BSLC before, most recently this past August for our Back to School Education Options panel discussion. Peter will share his insights into children's natural abilities to learn, the importance of freedom and play, and how this coalesces with a self-directed approach to education.

Scott will facilitate some group coaching to address specific concerns and challenges faced by parents whose children are (or may soon be) self-directed learners at BSLC and is also keenly interested in hearing from our community about their experiences with self-directed learning. We will explore the question of how to apply the principles of self-directed education to the whole family experience -- beyond the conventional notion of education as something that's completely separate from family life.

When:   Wednesday, January, 27, 2016 7:00-9:00 PM
Where:  Bay State Learning Center
             45 Bullard Street
             Dedham, MA 02026

We know this is somewhat short notice but when Scott had an opening in his schedule during his visit to the East Coast, we jumped on the opportunity.

Please RSVP to Marjorie Kukstis if you plan to attend the event.

We hope to see many of you next week!

Unconditionally!   Since 2006, he has been sharing practical parenting wisdom through the free Daily Groove mailing list, online at www.dailygroove.com . He lives in Portland, Oregon, with his partner and their two teenagers, who are life-long, self-directed learners.

Peter Gray, Ph.D., a research professor of psychology at Boston College, is a specialist in developmental and evolutionary psychology. He is the author of an introductory textbook, Psychology, and Free to Learn, a book about children's natural ways of educating themselves, and how adults can help (Basic Books, 2013). For more information and articles, visit his blog Freedom to Learn. Peter is a well-known critic of standard educational systems and is frequently invited to speak about children's needs for free play, the psychological damage inflicted on children through our present methods of schooling, and the ways in which children are designed, by natural selection, to control their own education.
