The Tiger's Roar!
Your Community Brief from Jones High School
Friday, December 15, 2017

Principal Kirby with Alyssa Smith at the Khan Academy recognition ceremony at the December 11 School Board meeting (see story below).
While next week is only a four-day week for the students (no school on Friday, December 22) it remains a busy one including both Common Final Exams (CFE) for semester one courses and Holiday Spirit Week (each day carries its own theme such as Monday's Crazy Socks Day - see calendar). If you have a student sitting for a CFE this week, please make sure they get a good night's rest prior to the test and eat a healthy breakfast the day of the exam.

To date, we have managed to raise $30,000 of the $38,000 deposit due in January so our band and choir students can perform next spring at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Jones High School is steeped in a very rich history and this opportunity will go down as a major achievement for the high school. If there is any way you can provide some assistance in the next few weeks, please do what you can - www.supportjoneshigh.com We don't want our Tigers miss out on what will be a performance of a lifetime. They have all worked and practiced so terribly hard to earn this spot on the stage at Carnegie Hall. Thank you.

With the Winter Break now only four full schools days away for the students, I want to remind our Tigers to take advantage of the free SAT practice through Khan Academy. Prizes will be awarded next month for time well spent practicing up to December 21st!

Thank you for reviewing our progress and have a wonderful weekend!

JHS Medical Magnet Program

Kudos to our Medical Magnet students who volunteered at the Black Nurses Rock Orlando (BNRO) holiday gala on Saturday evening for six hours. Students assisted BNRO members by acting as pages, guiding patrons to their tables, and monitoring the silent auction table.

A note from BNRO Vice President Novello Penick: "Thank you, thank you. The students were awesome and very helpful in assisting us to have a successful gala. We really enjoyed and appreciated having them work with us. We look forward to working with you at future events."

Thank you to Medical Magnet Coordinator Selina Wells-Harris for coordinating the student volunteers.

Tigers Study at Princeton University

It has been really chilly in Orlando this week, but not as cold as it was in Princeton, New Jersey! Kudos to these Medical Magnet and International Baccalaureate Tigers who were four of just 75 students in the entire nation chosen to study at the W.E.B. DuBois Scholars Institute Accelerated Learning Academy at Princeton University.

This trip would not have been possible without your generous donations to the Jones High School Foundation. Congratulations Alexandria, Gianna, Abrielle, and Kenny. Way to put Jones High School on the Ivy League map!
