The Tiger's Roar!
Your Community Brief from Jones High School
Monday, November 20, 2017

Principal Kirby with Parent & Community Involvement Coordinator Kat Kuehn at last week's Teach-In.
HERO Positive Behavior System
Our new HERO system helps us keep track of students doing great things and students who need to improve on certain behaviors. Since the implementation of the HERO system in October, many students have received positive points for doing good deeds, showing school spirit, attending Saturday tutoring, and improving grades. Gift cards, candy and other prizes have been given to those students.

Congratulations to the following 15 students who were honored at last week's Pep Rally in front of the entire student body. Most of these students are on the Honor Roll and earned the majority of their points by attending Saturday tutoring. It's a win-win situation!

Antoniya Benn, Melvin Crowder, Alberto Emmanuel, Shaunte Goodwill, Mark Hayes, Tyrone Howard, Andrew Love, Jasmine Loving, Dwayne Moore, Equanzzia Pettigrew, Taronica Pipkin, Jordan Reese, and Carlandra Roberts. We have one student leading the entire school for positive behavior points. Congratulations to Junior Felicia Shoemate, Honor Roll student and JHS varsity girls basketball player!

Teach-In '17
Thank you to the 70+ speakers who carved out time from their busy schedules this past Wednesday to speak to our students about their careers and the importance of securing an education (see vital signs below). We plan to feature these guests and their organizations in our next issue.

Special Event at the Orlando Science Center

We hope you will join us for our first ever private event at the Orlando Science Center on Monday, December 11 from 5:30 - 8:30pm. This event is open to all JHS students and their families. We will also have transportation for those who need it. Please click here to RSVP.

Please continue to check our school website calendar for other important upcoming events.

Happy Thanksgiving!
While today, November 20, is a regular school day due to Hurricane Irma, the campus will be closed November 21-24 for the Thanksgiving break. Classes will resume on schedule Monday, November 27.

Remembering that this is a very special time of year when we gather to give thanks, the Jones community truly has a great deal to give thanks for this year. If you simply take this one issue of The Tiger's Roar! as a small sample, you can see what I mean in a few seconds.

We are fortunate to be part of well led school district like OCPS with the all resources it provides. We are blessed in having so many motivated students guided by teachers that seem to never run out of energy. Our support staff members show up daily doing whatever they can to keep the campus running smoothly providing a safe, healthy environment that sets the stage for learning. And I am indeed lucky to have such a tight group of administrators that never lose sight of the prize - providing our Tigers with a top-notch secondary education preparing them for whatever life path they might choose. As your principal now of only a few months, please know how here at Thanksgiving how thankful I am to be at your service.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

District Safety Message

OCPS families, as you may be aware, some schools have been disrupted recently due to prank notices of impending danger. Such pranks not only waste valuable instructional time, but they also waste law enforcement resources. It's NO laughing matter.

On many occasions, the authorities are able to identify the culprits and they are disciplined accordingly, including suspension or possibly expulsion.

Please help us stress the message to our young people that such attempts are not considered entertaining and can result in criminal prosecution.

If your child ever receives or notices suspicious information during the school day, ask them to immediately report it to an adult on campus. Concerns about information obtained at home should be reported to your local law enforcement agency.

For the safety of our students, we are working with the Orange County Sheriff's Office, Florida and other local law enforcement agencies. Everyone needs to remember that if you see something, say something.

Tiger Vital Signs
Fundamental weekly indicators that drive student achievement . . .

These basic statistics are our leading success indicators when it comes to student achievement.

Daily attendance, being on time to school in the morning, being on time between classes during the school day, and positive behavior efforts as measured by HERO points earned collectively help to paint a picture of progress well before our Tigers sit for the state exams next spring.

We appreciate our families' support. Thank you!

Mathematics with Ms. Hagan
Students in Ms. Hagan's Pre-Calculus and Calculus classes were invited to attend the American Society of Mathematicians' 2017 Arnold Ross Lecture at the Orlando Science Center. The purpose of the series of lectures for talented high school mathematics students is to stimulate their interest in math beyond the traditional classroom and to show them the tremendous opportunities for careers in in math - as teachers, researchers in government, industry, and university programs.

Congratulations to the following students who were chosen based on pre-qualifying test scores: Keisha Benjamin, Kenneicke Ellis, Josiah Jackson, Damian Jean-Baptiste, Prenisha Jean-Charles, Vanessa Julien, Jeana Louis, Alexandria Magee, Ashante Smith, Takeyvia Smith, Jonathan Thomas, Marchel Washington, and Tamyra Williams.

IB Theory of Knowledge with Dr. Hardy
What is going on in these pictures? We're so glad you asked! Dr. Hardy's IB Theory of Knowledge students are working on language as a way of knowing. They learned about inductive reasoning and applied it to creating games with random toys and props that Dr. Hardy brought from home. After developing game rules and a catchy name, students demonstrated their games to the rest of the class.

Curb Appeal - Campus Beautification

On Friday, November 10 more than 60 students from IB, National Honor Society, JROTC, Skills USA, Student Government, Spanish Club, Best Buddies, Dramatic Tigers, Swimming, and Art Club participated in our campus beautification project. This was made possible thanks to District 5 School Board Member Kathleen "Kat" Gordon and OCPS Grounds Department.

Students worked tirelessly to clean up trash, dig holes, rake, and plant beautiful new greenery in the beds lining our parking lot. It was a pleasure to watch our best and brightest students take such pride in revitalizing our campus. Special thanks to Pat Carney, Orlando Camacho, and Daniel Cartaya Saroza for bringing us all of the tools, supplies and foliage to make this possible.
