Joplin Girl Scout Accepts the Bronze Cross Award

Alexis (Lexi) Prater of Joplin accepted the Bronze Cross award, the Lexi highest lifesaving honor bestowed by Girl Scouts of the USA, at a ceremony this month at Mintahama Program Center.

Lexi trusted her gut instincts that something terrible was about to happen on May 22, 2011 when she insisted that her family immediately leave their home when she saw a storm brewing. Minutes later, the Prater's home was leveled by the EF-5 tornado that devastated the community.

Thanks to Lexi's persistence, her parents, sister, and pets escaped the tornado, which left their home decimated. They sought refuge in her grandparents' basement a few blocks south, and although that home was damaged, they were unharmed. Lexi took three things with her as she fled her home: her dog, guinea pig and her Girl Scout Brownie sash.

The Bronze Cross is a Girl Scout Lifesaving award which has been part of the Girl Scout program since the start of the Movement 100 years ago. Lexi, then a Girl Scout Brownie with Troop 26271, was nominated by her leader, Holly Crane, with the approval of the Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland council and Girl Scouts of the USA. The national award is given for saving a life or attempting to save a life with risk to the candidate's own life.

"Lexi demonstrated amazing courage and leadership in the face of a very dangerous and scary event," said Anne Soots, Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland CEO. "We are proud of her for following her instincts and helping her family find safety in the midst of a devastating storm."

Does Your Troop Want to Work with a Pro Chef?

The Just Desserts fundraising event is back! The contest features professional chefs working with Girl Scout troops to create delicious treats each featuring a different variety of Girl Scout cookie. Just Desserts benefits Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland and will be Thursday, February 7, 2013 at Drury Lodge in Cape Girardeau.

Your troop can participate! Troops will be paired with local Cape Girardeau chefs and asked to create a unique dessert recipe using Girl Scout cookies. Interested troop leaders should contact Renee Trout, resource development manager, by December 21, 2012.

Cookie Chefs is now a PEP- Act Quickly!

We have had so many requests for the Cookie Chefs Program and Five Skills Cookie Rally Ideas Program that we have made them into a Perfectly Effortless Programs (PEPs)! PEPs are easy to understand packets that all troops and service units can request and do!

Kick off the Girl Scout Cookie Program with your very own Cookie Chefs or Cookie Rally! In Cookie Chefs, girls will become culinary artists as they work as a team to follow a recipe or build a cookie creation, and then get to eat their masterpieces! The Five Skills Cookie Rally Ideas Program gives leaders ideas for making cookie rallies a learning opportunity for girls.

All leaders interested in ordering cookies for these PEPs should do so through their service unit cookie manager. Service unit cookie managers will submit the 2013 Service Unit Cookie Rally Extra Cookies Order Form to the council with payment. The deadline for ordering cookies is November 30, 2012 and the cost is $2.00 per box. All Girl Scout cookie varieties are available, but cookies may not be resold. Boxes will be marked to prohibit the reselling of cookies. Any questions about this process can be directed to your local product program specialist.
