An Electronic Newsletter by the Community of Christ known as Joy Lutheran Church

Our Mission Statement

We of Joy Lutheran Church foster
grace-filled relationships with Christ
through worship, fellowship, and service.

Gospel:  Matthew 25:1-13
Today the prophet Amos calls for justice to roll down like waters. Paul urges us to encourage one another with the promised coming of the Lord. Jesus tells the parable of the wise and foolish bridesmaids. Surrounded by the faithful of every time and place, we celebrate Christ's coming in our midst in the word of life and the feast of victory-the marriage feast of the lamb.

Sleeping Bags for Our Homeless Neighbors

Many of us have some extra sleeping bags in our garages or our sheds, maybe some we haven't used for many years.

Marcia Wakeland tells us that there is an informal "give away time" of supplies for homeless folks that happens once a month at Central Lutheran.  One of the most coveted items is sleeping bags, which Marcia said went last week in a matter of minutes.

If you have some unused bags, talk to Pastor Martin or Marcia Wakeland, or bring them to the church, where Marcia can get them to the folks who organize this event each month.  Thank you.

How Do You Say Grace?
At the Joy of Reading Book Club's October meeting they were talking about saying Grace before a meal and thought it might be fun if the people of Joy wanted to share in our weekly newsletter the blessing their family says before a meal. If you have a prayer you'd like to contribute, please email it to the church office and we'll share one each week.

Book Club volunteered to started it off with their own version. This week's submission is from Wayne & Judy Rush:

For food for raiment.
For life for opportunity.
For friendship and fellowship.
We thank thee Oh Lord.
Amen.

Socktober Results

The final count on the sock collection is 543!  I will divide them between Brother Francis, Beans, Covenant House, Clare House and the AWAIC Shelter.  Thank you so much for your generosity!

Children's Chapel Help Needed
One of the more important ministries we offer is "Children's Chapel."  During the sermon-time at worship, our younger siblings can go and enjoy an age-appropriate sermon while their big people can enjoy the Sermon.  We need volunteers to make this happen.  Families, couples, high schoolers - all could help out.  We have some curriculum that is available if you would like to help.  The new three weeks are all ready to go!

Talk to Cynthia Oistad if you would like to be part of this essential part of our ministry together!

Candlelight Vigil for Homeless Youth

On Thursday, November 16th at 6pm, hundreds of people will congregated in Town Square Park to take part in the annual Covenant House Candlelight Vigil for Homeless Youth.  It will be a cold and windy evening filled with hope and a beacon of light.  We will be joined by many devoted members of our community to share their words with our youth that there is hope and help for all of them.  They join us on this cold dark night to remember the thousands of homeless youth who have entered the doors of Covenant House Alaska; brave young men and women seeking shelter from the cold dark emptiness of the streets; kids from all walks of life, who have come to us seeking safety, stability and a sense of dignity, all of which have been missing from their lives.

Lighting a candle is more than a symbolic gesture.  Through this display of support, each vigil participant became a voice, an advocate and a friend to our young people.  This community brings the light of love and hope into their lives; a light that the darkness of the streets can never extinguish.

Please join us in lighting the night for our kids, and helping us provide strength, comfort and courage for all of their tomorrows.

A special thank you to this year's sponsor GCI!

Advent Wreath Making & Breakfast
Joy Lutheran Church is hosting a FREE, community-wide Advent Wreath Making event on Sunday, Nov. 26 at 11:00AM.  All materials for wreath making will be provided by the church, and we will be serving brunch as well.   This is a great event for families to come and make an advent wreath for their home and to kick off the Christmas season. All are welcome!

If you are interested in joining us to make an Advent wreath, we would greatly appreciate your RSVP to joylutheran@gmail.com so we can make sure we have enough materials on-hand!

It's That Time of Year Again:
2017 Thanksgiving Blessing Plans

Plans are shaping up for this year's Thanksgiving Blessing.  Last year, the Thanksgiving Blessing project provided foods for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner for approximately 210 families in Chugiak and Eagle River.

Set-up for the event is the Sunday evening before Thanksgiving, and meals are given out Monday, Nov. 20th from 3:00-8:00PM.  This year, Joy Lutheran is being asked to collect 300 cans of sweet potatoes or yams .  We do not want to exceed that goal by much, if any.  Excess food from the event goes to the local Food Pantry.  They reported the abundance of "seasonal favorites" they received in prior years tended to sit on the shelves after the holidays.

We will need the same in-house Joy Lutheran volunteers as last year - hosts to provide & refill cookies and refreshments, hosts to help keep restrooms and building tidy, one or two home delivery drivers, and a few folks for our sidewalk maintenance crew.  We have a sign-up sheet on the Opportunities bulletin board for the JLC positions.

If you'd like to volunteer for any Love INC positions, follow the instructions for their online sign-up below:
