Flamborough E-NEWS
September 2018
Welcome to the September 2018 E-NEWS. Below are important updates regarding Joe Sams Park, the Puslinch Bridge and much more. Good luck to all students this September - best wishes for a wonderful start to the new academic year. October Election Day is an important day for all of us, and I encourage everyone to take the opportunity to build this community together by voting on October 22nd. Please join me for the 2018 Flamborough Women's Resource Centre (FWRC) Annual Chili Fest fundraiser on Tuesday September 25, 4-8pm at the Waterdown Legion- all proceeds go directly to supporting women and children in Flamborough.

Don't forget to please call or email my office if you need help with any issues. If you see me in the community, stop and say hi.

Joe Sams Park Upgrades

Please click here to watch my latest update on Joe Sams Park where we've officially opened a brand new sun shelter, a joint partnership between the Waterdown Minor Baseball Association, the Waterdown Lions Club, city staff and myself. The park is located 1 km north on Hamilton Street/Centre Road with numerous woodland trails to explore, including the John MacLennan Wetland Trails.

John was a well-known local champion of environment and creation of parkland in our wonderful community. Before I was elected I had the pleasure of participating with John on the cities Joe Sams Park design and development committee. Previously the park was Agro Brothers dairy farm. After we acquired it, the committee was formed and today we are seeing the fabulous results. We named part of the trails the John MacLennan Wetland Trails for his dedication and commitment to our community. Thank you for taking the time to view the video.

Waterdown Legion Vimy Oak Tree Fundraiser

In 2017, we planted a Vimy Oak Tree on the South East corner of the Waterdown Legion, which has gained a lot of interest by members in the community. There is now a plan place a plaque beside it with the story and background of the tree. Projected costs are $1700.00. All donors to the project will be recognized. This is an excellent opportunity to remember a member of your family who served in the military. There are three levels of sponsorship:

GOLD - $100
SILVER - $50
BRONZE - $25

If you wish to contribute to this very worthwhile project, please complete the form available in the legion with a cheque or cash and hand in to the Bar Steward. Thanks for your support.

There are a number of ongoing events and fundraisers going on at the Waterdown Legion this month- all events and important information is listed at www.waterdownlegion.ca under “What’s Going On”.

Waterdown Memorial Park Parking Lot

This past June, City Council unanimously supported my motion at a Council meeting for the reconstruction of the Waterdown Memorial Park parking lot, which includes underground drainage infrastructure with new parking lot paving and lot markings. Staff have been working with the contractor and construction is anticipated to begin late September to be completed by the beginning of November in time for the Flamborough Santa Claus Parade.

New Stoplight For Hamilton Street at White Oak Drive and Melanie Crescent

Concrete and underground works are currently underway for a new stoplight to be installed on Hamilton Street at White Oak Drive and Melanie Crescent. It is expected that it will be completed and operational by mid October.

Meander Close / Centre Road Pedestrian Crossing

The Pedestrian Crossing in Carlisle on Centre Road at Meander Close has been installed, and is up and running for safe crossings.

Puslinch Bridge Replacement Over Highway 401 - Updates

The MTO is moving forward with the replacement of the Concession Road 7 bridge over Highway 401, which will be built west of the current bridge to accommodate the future widening of the highway. The Concession Road 7 / McLean Road intersection north of the bridge will be improved to better accommodate truck turning movements. Traffic will be maintained for the majority of the construction with some short-term closures required. During the removal of the existing bridge, 401 traffic will be redirected to the Emergency Detour Route- which is anticipated to take place on a single weekend night. Construction of the bridge is expected to start in 2019.

The design and construction report is available for review and comments for 30 days, starting August 20 in Freelton- details below. Comments are encouraged to be submitted by September 18, please read more here .

The youth strategy project will roll out in 3 phases over the course of 2018/2019. For more details, please click here.
