First Church News & Updates - July 14, 2017
"Holy Manna" arr. Larry Sue

Among the many talented musicians at First Church, this mother/son duo stands out. Nancy and Alex Alvarez rang handbell duets in worship last Sunday. Watch, listen and enjoy this video and appreciate the synchronicity of body, mind and spirit.
Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy this First Church news!

Sermon Series: The Gospel and Dr. Seuss
Last summer, we had fun with  All God's Critters and celebrated the roles that animals played in the Bible. This year, we bring into conversation the teachings of the Bible and the writings of Dr. Seuss in our new sermon series,  The Gospel and Dr. Seuss. You will be surprised at how well they come together. Our children will be doing some of that in Sunday School and it will also become a part of our children's times on Sunday morning.

Will there be a sermon or at least a large part of one be done entirely in rhyme? Will the preachers have any wisdom to spare should they dare to share? And do you have a  cat in the hat hat to wear? Our choirs are working hard on selections from Seussical and the Lorax. Zany series like these have a way of helping us hear the gospel with new ears and allows us another way to invite people to worship services just to experience the novelty of it all.

Sunday, July 9

Sermon Title:  "Oh, the Thinks You Can Think"
Scripture:     I Corinthians 2:6-16
Rev. Katie Meek will preach at the 8:30 worship service and Dr. Will Cotton will preach at the 9:40 and 11 am worship services this Sunday.  The Source , our weekly devotional guide, is available on the church website . Holy Communion will be celebrated at all services.
Please join us in worship this Sunday at  8:30 am (Sanctuary), 9:40 am (FLC), or 11 am (Sanctuary).
Mission Panama is coming up soon!
Mission Panama
First Church takes our third trip to serve the Panama Village on August 5!
Fourteen people, including ten medical professionals, will be doing four full days of medical care under the leadership of missionaries Rev. David and Cindy Ceballos. Missionaries are Dr. Richard Anderson, Gwen Anderson (RN), Mendy Barnett (RN), Nathan Barnett (Pharmacist), Dr. Paul Berg, Amy Berg (PA), Jennifer Glasgow, Melissa Hamilton (Nursing Student), Justin Hamilton, Mitzi Laramy (RN), Rev. Katie Meek, Diane Scheler (RN), Ralph Snyder, and Terri Ward (RN).

As one of The Villages, this is a church-wide missional partnership. You are a part of this. So here's how you can help from home!
  • Provide Medical Supplies-Please bring the following supplies to church on July 23 and 30: Vitamins (adult), toothbrushes and toothpaste (children and adult), Children's Benadryl (liquid), saline eye drops, travel bar soap, and combs. All supplies must be in their original wrapping. There will be places to drop your donations.
  • Donate-We will be passing the chicken buckets July 23 and 30 to raise money for children's wheelchairs (approximately $1000) and finishing hardware for our sister church, Punta Delgadita Methodist Church. The church was started by our missionaries and is pastored by missionary Rev. David Ceballos. On August 6, we will be worshipping in the new building. The church was started underneath a tree just four years ago and now they have a two-story building with a worship space, a full kitchen to feed local children, and a place for other Methodist Christians to stay while they're helping to plant a whole district of churches in central Panama. We are so proud!
  • Pray-Pick up a prayer bracelet at church on July 23 and 30, wear it while we're in Panama, August 5-13, and use it as a reminder to pray for Panama every day First Church is there serving!

We are producing a new pictorial directory this year and we want you to be in it!

Please note this change...Sessions are now open beginning at 10 am on Sunday, August 6.We have photo sessions appointments open August 2 - 6 and August 9. We will also have sessions available September 13 - 17, but those will not be available for signup until more of the August dates are filled.

It is easy to sign up.  Click here to learn more and sign up online. We will also have people available before and after worship services this Sunday, to assist you with the online sign-up. Look for us in the Sanctuary foyer and both entrances to the Family Life Center.

Report from Kairos #63 from Tanja LaNou

Thank you so very much for all the love and support you have shown our Kairos team and me for Kairos #63. Your cookies, prayers, and offering made a great impact to the participants. Many of them shared over and over how they have never experienced a love like this and that it gave them a glimpse and deeper understanding just how big God's love is for them. At the closing our outside team was gifted this beautiful painting from an inmate. The grey represents the Ferguson unit, the black represents the dark places within the unit, and the color filling in represents the Love of Christ we share from the outside. Without you this would have not been possible and I am so very grateful to each of you.
Middle School Mission
Successful Middle School Mission Trip

Last Sunday, we commissioned 31 students and adults on our Middle School Mission Team as they departed for Brackettville, TX for our 4th year in partnership HOPE Outreach. The work teams built wheel chair ramps, cleared brush, worked in the thrift shop and built picnic tables. When not on our work sites, we spent time with community members. Every year we travel to Brackettville to bless them and find ourselves being the ones blessed. Please check out our Student Ministries Facebook Page FUMC Round Rock Students to see pictures and videos of our team serving!
VBS Mission
VBS Mission Report

The 391 children who attended Vacation Bible School at First Church not only learned about God, but they were also involved in missions for other children. VBS children gave $1562.35 that will be used to purchase clean water for 231 children for one year in Peru and donated nonperishable goods to the Round Rock Area Serving Center. Fifth graders made dog biscuits for WILCO and placemats for Drive a Senior. They also served at the Ronald McDonald House in Austin and Texas Baptist Children's Home, visited Wyoming Springs Assisted Living and Hearthstone Senior Center, and stocked the Round Rock Area Serving Center food pantry shelves with over 1200 pounds of non-perishable food items donated by the VBS participants.
