"A nation's culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people."

-Mohandas Gandhi

Happy Birthday, Medicare!

On July 30th, Medicare will celebrate its 46th year. This well-respected program has been providing affordable and reliable health insurance for elderly and disabled Americans for nearly half a century, while maintaining low administrative costs (below 3%).

The Solution, Not the Problem

With 50 million people uninsured, and millions more underinsured, cuts to Medicare should be off the table. Instead, Congress should be protecting, improving, and expanding it to all Americans. Let's celebrate the 46 years of success of this bedrock program by pledging to Respect, Protect, and Reject!

OWL Signs on to LCAO Letter Calling on Leadership in Washington to Protect America's Elders

As the deadline to raise the debt ceiling nears, the Leadership Council of Aging Organizations (LCAO) is calling on Executive and Congressional leadership to address the deficit in a balanced way that would protect America's elders.

A recent letter to policymakers involved in deficit reduction talks included eight principles to guide budget negotiations and was signed by 39 of the LCAO's member organizations, including OWL.

Executive Director Bobbie Brinegar released a statement on behalf of OWL:

"If Congress and the President enact spending cuts in Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid to reduce the federal deficit, they should have to explain their reasons for doing so to each of the Americans whose benefits they would cut.  It will be extremely difficult to rationalize undermining the safety nets for millions of individuals, especially after a lifetime of work and contributions to these social insurance programs.  Women, especially those who are older, are more likely to rely heavily on benefits from Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid."

OWL Joins Forces with Retirement USA to
"Halt the Assault on Retirement Security"

On July 12th, OWL signed on to a letter asking Congress members
to strengthen Social Security and Medicare and to enact measures to protect and improve pensions and retirement savings.

Cuts to Social Security's cost of living adjustments will lead to significant reductions in benefits for millions of vulnerable older Americans. In today's battered economy, Congress should be strengthening, not weakening, this social insurance program, which provides a lifeline to tens of millions of retirees.

These proposed cuts in Social Security are the latest salvo in a broad-based attack on retirement security. These measures will torpedo retirement security for America's workers and increase the nation's Retirement Income Deficit.

According to the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College, the Retirement Income Deficit - which is the gap between what Americans have saved for retirement as of today and what they should have saved by now in order to meet basic needs in retirement - currently stands at a staggering $6.6 trillion. Proposed cuts in Social Security will only deepen the Retirement Income Deficit.
