Greetings!
 | | Meggie chillin' at the pool! |
The big news for most of us this weekend was the Derecho storm and the accompanying power outages and heat wave!
I hope you and your families were able to stay safe and beat the heat like Meggie, the buff beauty pictured here.
Because not all pups have a raft and pool, we have some hot weather tips to share with you, courtesy of Web MD. It's important to keep your pooch cool as the thermometer climbs!
And although you wouldn't catch us playing tennis in this heat, we will be cheering on athletes playing in the Citi Open tennis tournament (Saturday, July 28) so don't forget to stop by and say hi!
Here's to a happy, healthy summer for you all!
- Beth

New OBG Puppy, Jagger, Wants His Moves Back
Jagger is a lively, outgoing, happy puppy who was found living on the streets - so happy, in fact, that he was named after the song "Moves Like Jagger" because he wouldn't sit still!
He came to OBG from South Carolina with kennel cough, plus he was limping and in pain. The vet confirmed he has a complete fracture of the femur in his left rear leg - sadly, it looks like the results of a traumatic injury that happened before he was dumped at the shelter. The vet predicts he will need surgery to the tune of $3,500!
Jagger is on pain meds for now but will meet with an orthopedist this week and we hope to get him the surgery he needs ASAP. Unfortunately, this does not come cheap and we really don't have the funds for such an expensive surgery right now. Jagger is hoping you can save the day by making a donation of any size to his surgery fund. Thank you!

Fosters Needed!
Frisco is a handsome 7 year old guy looking for temporary digs! He's simply awesome but he has a tall request when it comes to the rescue world . . . he prefers to be the one and only furkid in the home. This is tough since most foster families already have beloved dogs of their own! If you have no other pets and can provide Frisco with a place to hang his leash, you'll be glad you did! He's FUN on four legs!! For starters, he's oh so handsome, he knows some commands and he has a great energy level so walks and outings are much to his liking! Frisco is housebroken, crate-trained, and he doesn't get on furniture. Read all about him here. Can you help Frisco escape from the kennel? If Frisco isn't right for your home, we always have other dogs ready to be sprung from the kennel. Click here to see who is patiently waiting for a foster home.

June Adoptions: 19 Dogs including Sweetpea!
We have not been able to wipe the smiles off of our faces since Sweetpea was adopted! She waited over a year to find her home. Her forever family finally discovered our SWEET (PEA) girl who is 11 years old, blind & deaf. She is now spreading her contagious happiness to her adoring family! And rumor has it she might be getting an OBG sister soon, keep your paws crossed! Click here to check out our recently adopted dogs! Sadly, we had to say goodbye to foster dogs Liam & Scooter who passed over to the Rainbow Bridge this month. |

News Corner Attention dog lovers, we want to keep you informed! There has been recent controversy/proposed legistation surrounding the pit bull breed. Specifically, the Maryland Court of Appeals has labeled all pit bull-type dogs as "inherently dangerous." This is more than just a label. The resulting effects could be far reaching, as most all mixed dogs who find themselves in MD animal shelters will not stand much of a chance of being adopted, if they even slightly resemble a pit bull. It may force some dog owners to give up their well behaved, beloved pets rather than give up their home. Please stay informed by visiting the Humane Society website often. You are urged to call the Maryland Humane Society for more information. (Tami Santelli, Maryland State Director of The Humane Society of the United States, at tsantelli@humanesociety.org or 240-731-7862.) Please click here to visit the Maryland HSUS site to learn all about this hot topic.

OBG's Cocker Angels:
Susan Arango & Debbie Davenport Together, they have planned and organized four of OBG's major fundraisers this year, which have all been wildly successful! The Bow-Wow Bowl-a-thon, Capital Pride Festival, OBG's presence at the Cocker Spaniel Agility Trials, and the recent Canine Cruise were enjoyed by many!!
In addition to raising funds for the dogs, each of these events has been tons of fun. You have donated countless hours to OBG and always show up with a smile.
Susan, the Cocker Kissing Booth wouldn't be the same without your enthusiastic "hawking" of kisses and spritzes and chatting with passers by!
Debbie, something would be missing without your infectious smile and laugh - and of course your ringing of the Kissing Booth bell!
Thank you for supporting OBG tirelessly!

UPDATE: Fluffy's Biggest Loser Campaign!
Fluffy has BIG news! He has done so well dropping pounds, he was recently able to get his cherry eyes repaired and a much needed dental cleaning. Our poor Fluff had seven teeth extracted but we know he must be feeling a world better.
Fluffy has been whipped into shape, recovered nicely from his surgeries and now that he has some free time, he'll be interviewing families! His foster mom can't stop raving about his wonderful temperament. Would you like to be the lucky family who has the chance to share your life with Fluff? Check out his bio to see if he's for you.
Can you believe he has lost 13.2 pounds?! Watch his progress on his blog!
