Taking Senior Safety Seriously

Most people have heard of "babyproofing" a home-things like putting up gates around stairs, locks on cabinets, and safety plugs in electrical outlets-to make sure a crawling baby or running toddler can't hurt themselves. But how many of us have considered "senior proofing" our homes when we suddenly become responsible for the care of an elderly parent or relative? There are a number of common senior safety concerns that every caregiver should be aware of and take preventative steps to make their homes safer to navigate. Falls, medication management, and handling physical changes such as hearing or vision loss or declining cognitive function are just a few examples of safety hazards seniors face.

Heart Healthy Recipe

Cold water fish such as cod contains heart and brain healthy omega 3 fatty acids and B vitamins. Studies show that people who eat fish regularly have a lower risk for cardiovascular problems like heart attacks than people who aren't fish eaters. No clue how to make fish? Try out this super easy recipe for cod from the Mayo Clinic. You can always swap bread crumbs mixed with chopped fresh herbs for the stuffing and dijon mustard for the honey for a different twist!

July 2013
July Could Bring Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Floods...Are You Ready?
Are You Prepared for Disaster?

If a natural disaster strikes, will you be ready? We are one month into hurricane season, and everyone who lives on the East Coast should be aware of the dangers hurricanes bring in the form of high winds, flooding, power outages, and rip currents. Now is the time to make sure you have adequate insurance and a plan in place should it become necessary to ride out a storm or evacuate. According to FEMA, your emergency supply kit should contain at a minimum the following:

  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
  • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Manual can opener for food
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger
Families and businesses need to have a plan in place should a hurricane strike. It is a good idea to do a practice run of your emergency plan ahead of time so you have an opportunity to work out any glitches. For more information on disaster preparedness, visit FEMA or the National Weather Service's website.

Inferno by Dan Brown

Overview:

In his international blockbusters The Da Vinci CodeAngels & Demons, and The Lost Symbol, Dan Brown masterfully fused history, art, codes, and symbols. In this riveting new thriller, Brown returns to his element and has crafted his highest-stakes novel to date.

In the heart of Italy, Harvard professor of symbology Robert Langdon is drawn into a harrowing world centered on one of history's most enduring and mysterious literary masterpieces . . . Dante's Inferno.

Against this backdrop, Langdon battles a chilling adversary and grapples with an ingenious riddle that pulls him into a landscape of classic art, secret passageways, and futuristic science. Drawing from Dante's dark epic poem, Langdon races to find answers and decide whom to trust . . . before the world is irrevocably altered.

Just for Laughs:

"A man in his eighties went to the doctor for his annual health check-up. He told the doctor: 'I'm getting really forgetful. I forget where I live, I forget where I've parked my car, and I go into shops and I can't remember what it is that I want. And when I do get to the checkout, I find I've forgotten my wallet. It's getting pretty bad, doc. What can I do?'

The doctor thought for a moment and said: 'Pay me in advance.'"
