Community Garden, by Sybil Rampen

JCHAC Newsletter
August 2015

Is it me, or is the summer flying by?  Let's be sure to get out there and enjoy the wonderful weather and do those things we can do without having to bundle up.

What an abundance of beautiful food being grown on the grounds of JCHAC.  Lots of hot weather.  I'm sure a little rain would help, but the garden seems to be thriving.  I'm seeing a lot of hard work being put into tending the garden with some really great payoff.  The Canadian Garlic that was planted last fall is tremendous. It's so great that the gardeners have been able to enjoy and share local, organic produce.  How terrific is that !!!

We had some great events in July.  The kids who participated in the Leadership Quest Camp had loads of fun during their week of learning and playful activities.  It is wonderful to have young children romp around the property and enjoy life outdoors.  Makes me think of Sybil's Legacy she wrote last month when she talked about the early days and kids played outside for the most part, unplugged.  The Sound Reiki Full Moon Healing Meditation proved to be successful.  I am sure the session gave people a great kick start to the month of July.

The gallery is closed on Mondays, so is definitely closed this holiday Monday.  If you still want to see the Friends' Exhibition, it closes at 4:00 on Sunday, August 2nd. Please see below for more details.

Mary Rishcke will be leading another Watercolour Printmaking Workshop on Saturday, August 8th.  This workshop has proven to be quite popular and will focus again on printing on both paper and cloth.  Please see below segment for more details.

Upcoming is an interesting exhibition entitled "Hungarian Odyssey" that displays artwork from a group of artisans of Hungarian descent that spans over 5 decades.  Below you will find more details and links to videos and a website that showcases two of the artists' work.

Also, back by popular demand is Bill Ellis' Photography Workshop for point and shoot and DSLR cameras.  Bill has over 40 years of photographic experience and is a director with the Oakville Camera Club.  Please see below for more details.  Also, consider this as an opportunity as a "gift" for someone.

Memories of Sybil Rampen

Farmers donated a portion of their farm for one-room schools. "Snyder's Corners", white wood with lancet windows, was at the 9th line and Back Concession (Burnhamthorpe) while Coyne's and Munn's were also a long walk away.

Each school had a boy and girl door, separate outhouses and a pail with a dipper for water to be carried from a nearby farm. The teacher was supplied with a lethal black strap to use as required on the louty farm boys. She maintained complete silence while teaching all eight grades.  Occasionally, frighteningly stern Mr. Skuce came to inspect us.

A Gestetner with purple jelly, a form of early Xerox, provided desk work while the teacher taught one grade standing in front of the blackboard at a time. We also had slates. Alice Maxell arrived every morning in her model T Ford. She was paid less then $100 a month and lost her job when she got married. She was a hero. What and how she taught gave all those long ago children a future. I was teacher's pet!

Watercolour printmaking is a unique and flexible technique of creating dynamic and exciting original artwork that is diverse as each individual artist.

The effect is created by painting watercolour on a "plate" or thin piece of plastic. When it is completely dry it is placed on "damp" print paper and put through a press. The paint is transferred to the paper, or fabric, and becomes "the print". It is now a one-of-a-kind and cannot be duplicated!!!

At this stage, the artist may decide to add more colour, materials and other media to embellish and create further interest and interpretation of the vision. The effect is more textural and dimensional.

No experience required... just a love of colour. Children age 12 + are welcome.  This is a great opportunity to have a creative day for yourself or with your children or grandchildren for fun and artistic expression!!

This  fulfilling art workshop is in collaboration with Joshua Creek Studio.
