Irises at JCHAC, by Sybil Rampen

July 2015

As we enter into the summer months, life seems to have a whole new vibe.  The kids are out of school, people are heading off to cottages and various summer holiday locations.  The neighbourhoods are filled with outdoor walkers, particularly in the evenings as a relaxing "wind down" to the day.

We see a lot more visitors at the centre as people drop by to enjoy the scenery and art exhibitions, as well as taking a
breathtaking walk through the Labyrinth (see below for more details). The Community Garden continues to thrive. Anyone interested in participating can contact Peaches at Evolving Families Foundation by  email or at 289-259-5318.

Although the gallery is closed today, July 1st, the Nia program will run in the morning and there will be a special event in the evening (7:00 - 9:00 pm) :  Sound Reiki Full Moon Healing Meditation with Heather Hannan ( Intuitive Counsellor, Sound Reiki Master Teacher and Meditation Coach).  This will be a gentle healing meditation to release blocks that are affecting our lives and to clear our hearts of burdens that we carry. Please click here for reservations or more information, or contact Heather by email or 647-231-6330.  Cost is $25 per person.

The music of Sybil Rampen's Aunt Amice will be featured at a fundraiser for the Oakville Chamber Orchestra Youth Program on Sunday, July 26th.  The event starts at 3:00 and runs to 6:00 p.m. with Amice's music being played around 3:00.  The event will take place at the Holcim Waterfront Estate on Lakeshore Road and will also feature a silent auction, music by the Youth Concerto Competition winners as well as the Oakville Chamber Orchestra. Please visit Oakville Chamber Orchestra for more details.

Mary Rischke held a great Watercolour Printmaking workshop on Saturday, June 27th.  Lots of fun all round with some great artistic results.  Mary will let us know when she will be able to hold another workshop at JCHAC.

The opening for the Friends "Sybil's Choice" Exhibition was a great success on Sunday, despite the rainy weather. The exhibition will continue to run until August 2nd. Please see below for more details on this wonderful show.

JCHAC Community Outreach Programs was recently represented by Shirley Erskine, one of our jurors at our recent Halton Peel Exhibition. Shirley was one of three jurors for the "Kids Art Contest" held under the auspices of the Oakville Historical Society.  Shirley observed "The range in ages were from grades 2 through 7. The talent shown in all the entries was truly amazing.  They ran the gamut of simple line drawings to full page multicoloured, very energetic works of art.  The younger the entrant, the less inhibited the work.  The older the entrant, the more controlled was the work."  Thanks, Shirley, for your expertise and representing JCHAC.

The gallery and valley will soon be "alive" with youths participating in the  Leadership Quest Camp for Kids . They will be here from July 13 - 17 where there will be plenty of learning wrapped up into a whole lot of fun!!  The gallery will be open as usual during that time.

SUMMER PROGRAM SCHEDULE:
  • Nia will continue to run with Brigita Roube
  • Tea Leaf Reading continues: July 12th session

Joshua Creek Legacy
Memories of Sybil Rampen

A long time ago, country children were an integral part of family life.  They could walk unattended two miles to school, wander across the fields hunting wild mushrooms, explore the woods to pick wildflowers, fill little bowls with wild strawberries growing in someone else's orchard. It was a time of freedom.

Parents did not worry about the whereabouts of their children, only expecting them to come in time to lay the table for supper.  Farm children had many pets - kittens and puppies. They were familiar with lambs and calves, with baby chicks or turkeys, and could even milk a cow, Fun was sliding down hay mows, ducking into ponds, visiting neigbhours. They played outside in the summer, in the fall, and in the winter. Spring was a time of rejoicing. So much has changed.

Nia is a sensory-based movement practice that draws from martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. It empowers people of all shapes and sizes by connecting the body, mind, emotions and spirit.  Classes are taken barefoot to soul-stirring music in more than 45 countries. Trainings teach people how to get in their body, learn about The Body's Way and cultivate body-centered awareness. Every experience can be adapted to individual needs and abilities. Step into your own joyful journey with Nia, and positively shape the way you feel, look, think and live.

Nia has 52 moves that optimize the body's natural design. Nia choreography is body-centered and allows practitioners to connect to nine diverse movement styles: Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, jazz dance, modern dance, Duncan dance, yoga, Alexander Technique and Teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais. Nia classes balance form with freedom encouraging people to personalize the movements making choices for pleasure and comfort.

Gallery

We are presently taking proposals for future exhibitions in the Art Gallery. JCHAC Gallery is the home to ten shows each year with each exhibition running for one month to six weeks. The focus of the Gallery is to be a venue for emerging artists. Should a showing by a single artist seem daunting consider an exhibition of a collective of three or four artists.

We look forward to hearing from you and discussing opportunities. Please contact Janet Jansson by e-mail or call 905-257-4730.
