Baby It's HOT Outside

In case you haven't been outside in the last week, it has been HOT. We are talking temps just shy of 100 degrees Fahrenheit without the heat index! Extreme temperatures not only feel unbearable but they can also be deadly.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, hundreds of people die each year from extreme heat-more than hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and earthquakes combined! The elderly are particularly susceptible to heat related health complications. Visit our blog for tips on preventing and identifying the signs of heat stroke.

Gardening Corner

Now that you are several months into gardening season, it may be time to fertilize some of your plants depending on what type of soil and fertilizer you used when you planted. Make sure your tomato plants are firmly staked as they grow and get heavier. Depending on rainfall, you may need to increase your watering frequency as the days get warmer. It's never too late to start growing herbs, plant some today and use them to season your food instead of using salt! Mulching flower beds can preserve moisture and combat weeds.

Supreme Court Issues Favorable Ruling for Affordable Care Act

According to the AARP, there has been a significant drop in the number of uninsured older Americans ages 50-64 since the Affordable Care Act first passed. The court ruling on June 25, 2015 allowing for the continuation of federal government tax subsidies for health care coverage under the ACA ensures millions of Americans that otherwise couldn't qualify for affordable coverage have options for coverage. Among other things, many seniors benefit from lower prescription drug costs on drugs in the donut hole and greater access to free preventative services. For more information on the Affordable Care Act, visit Healthcare.gov.

Hurricane Season is Here!

Although it's been a quiet start to the hurricane season, which started June 1st and runs through Nov 30, now is the time to make sure you will be ready if a storm hits your area. Review your insurance policies and confirm they are up-to-date and have the coverage limits you need. Look over the CDC's emergency preparedness information toolkits and come up with a plan for evacuation should it become necessary. Consider what window coverings you may want to use during a storm and other steps you will need to take to secure your home. Now is a good time to replenish your emergency supply kit and make sure it has enough food, water and other supplies to last you and your family 3-5 days. If you are using one from a previous year, make sure you check the expiration dates on your non-perishable foods. Think about how you can help your elderly loved ones and neighbors prepare!
