Health Matters
July 2017 Newsletter

This summer, children will be attending summer camps put on by five of Community Health Charities of Nebraska’s charities. These camps give them the traditional summer camp experience while also allowing them to meet and spend time with other kids who share the same medical needs and experiences they do.

“I love camp not because of the activities we do or where we are. It's special because of all the people. I love how all the counselors take a week of their time to take care of us and hang out with us. They're more like friends than anything,” said Nina Meyer, who attended MDA Summer Camp in June, put on by the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Nebraska.

Medical Research Update
The FDA just approved the first drug in 22 years to treat ALS — the second treatment ever for the disease. Edaravone (brand name Radicava) is an antioxidant drug thought to preserve motor neurons in people with ALS, allowing the nerves to keep their muscles working for a longer period of time.
Story of Caring
In addition to remembering to be careful with fireworks and being cognizant about bike helmet safety, many other types of sports-related head injuries can be prevented or kept from getting worse. Leigh Veidman, a coach in Fremont and volunteer for the Brain Injury Alliance says, “Concussions are no joke!” Leigh reminds all of us that if a concussion is suspected, catch it early to prevent it from becoming worse. Wearing proper headgear and not allowing children to go back into the game until brain injury healing has taken place are especially important to remember during these carefree summer months.
