Student Messages
LATEST NEWS FROM THE MONARCH
Skyline College students organized a project about human trafficking, which entailed having classmates write encouraging messages to the women at The Monarch shelter. Their colorful notes and heartfelt sentiments were appreciated by the survivors, who are busy this month with summer school, career planning and employment opportunities. One international survivor recently received her T-Visa and now is successfully holding a full-time job. Although survivors at The Monarch are working hard on their studies and goals, they have been able to enjoy many recreational outings with Shelter Volunteers. Horseback riding, roads trip to state parks and beaches, and hiking are among the fun activities being shared this summer.

Volunteer Nidhi Barber
SHELTER VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Nidhi Barber
Nidhi was born in India and raised in Tokyo, Japan. She moved to Atlanta in 2012 to study Industrial Engineering at Georgia Tech, and it was there that she first become involved with the fight against human trafficking. She was aware of sex trafficking in high school, but she learned more about the issue after reading "Half the Sky" by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. At Georgia Tech, Nidhi was on the executive board of One Voice Atlanta, a campus organization dedicated to educating students about sex trafficking and empowering them to do something about it. With plans to move to the Bay Area after graduation, Nidhi did some research and found Freedom House online before moving. After she arrived, a good friend who works for Menlo Church also told her about the organization. She subsequently took the training to become a Shelter Volunteer. Nidhi thoroughly enjoys the time that she spends with the program participants. They inspire her, and she looks forward to continuing to help them and The Monarch staff in any way she can.
