JUNE 2017
Casino Night 2017
Director's Corner

Summer is moving right along and the back to school displays are starting to appear at stores. Here at the museum we are making our own plans for that last half of the year and for 2018.

Speakers are being lined up for the 2017-2018 Community Museum Meetings. So far we have Joseph Vetter (see the article on the right), Dr. Nick Wynne, and an exciting announcement we will soon be making regarding the Atlantic Center for the Arts. Then comes December and our Christmas party to be followed by our January annual banquet. We hope to announce our speaker for January within the next few weeks.

This month I would like to say a special thanks to the County of Volusia and the county commissioners for continuing to back and fund the Community Cultural Grant program. This grant provides funding to arts and cultural organizations throughout the county. If you see advertising from a museum, theatre, dance group, or similar and the Volusia County logo is on it, the group probably receives funding through this grant.

The ladies and gentlemen on the Cultural Council are truly dedicated to helping the arts and humanities in our county and we thank them for their continued support.

If you ever talk with your county commissioner; whether in person, by phone, by letter, or email, be sure to thank them for this program.

If you are in the downtown New Smyrna Beach area, remember, the museum is cool and dry so stop in.

Community Museum Meeting
Summer Break and New Meeting Date
We hope that you are enjoying your summer, whether with your own children, your grandchildren, or taking time for yourself. At the museum we are taking our regular summer break from having Thursday evening meetings during the months of June, July, and August.  We will pick back up in September with Joseph Vetter and in October we will be hosting Dr. Nick Wynne who will discuss his latest book on Florida's Utopian Communities.

When we start up again in September please note that we will be meeting on a new day. Beginning with the September 2017 meeting we will be meeting on the SECOND Thursday of each month rather than the third. The time will remain unchanged with the meeting beginning at 6:30pm. This change was made based upon feedback from those attending our meetings.

Do you know of a speaker that you think would be appropriate for one of our meetings? Maybe you are that speaker. Drop me a line at the museum with the information and let's see what we can do!

Hurricane Matthew Repair
Appeal Drive
During June the majority of you should have received a mailing from us containing information regarding the damages incurred during Hurricane Matthew and an appeal to help us raise the funds needed to make repairs. If you did not receive this letter please click here to view a copy.

Our goal is to raise $45,000 to help cover the costs of replacing our elevator, elevator shaft, and fixing the damage to our exterior display cases. What a great way to kick off the 2017-2018 Community Museum Meeting year! We are proud to welcome local educator Joseph M. Vetter as he gives his presentation "Hamilton: The Founding Father Without a Father."

Alexander Hamilton was an assistant to President George Washington and served as first Secretary of the Treasury. We hope you are able to attend this FREE event and learn more about the life of one of the men who helped found our country and why his story has been sweeping the country.

Night at the Museum 2017
October 20, 2017
6:00p-9:00p

It's time to start thinking about our largest annual fundraiser, Night at the Museum! This year we will be having a Night at the Museum Beach Party.

Tickets will be priced at $35 per person and will be available later this summer. Tickets include admission, entertainment, and food and drinks; all sponsored and provided by local businesses. There will also be live and silent auctions with lots of great items up for bid. If you would like to help with the planning of this event please drop me a line here at the museum and we will add you to our event email list. If you would like to donate to our auction please contact Robert at the museum. We are always looking for auctionable items whether they be material goods, gift certificates, tickets, or what have you.

We would like to welcome aboard our primary sponsor for the event, Robert Alonzo with Edward Jones Financial. Robert has served as our primary sponsor now for several years and we are honored that he has chosen to continue our partnership.

Digger's Digest

The museum and archaeology lab recently received this artifact as a donation. We did receive some information with the donation but preliminary research has not been able to verify the claims.

The piece of coquina measures approximately 16 inches long, is 7-8 inches wide and approximately 5 inches thick.
We would like to solicit your input as to what you think this may be and the significance of the carvings. If you feel you know what this is please feel free to contact us at nsmofhistory@gmail.com . Your comments will be forwarded to our archaeologists for review.
