In Focus: Dedicated Volunteer: Florence Crockett
Florence Bonness Crockett was born in the Maine town of Grand Lake Stream on July 4, 1940. As a child, Florence and her family would attend all the activities held in the village of her hometown. One year, little Florence shared with her mother that she was happy that everyone in town celebrated her birthday with her. Florence’s mother had to tell her that it wasn’t her birthday they were celebrating, but the birth of the United States, the 4th of July. Little Florence was disappointed but still felt very special, and that she is.

Florence grew up in Grand Lake Stream with her sister and two brothers. After graduating from Princeton high school, she attended the University of Maine at Machias where she received her Master's Degree in Childhood Development and met the love of her life, Vern Crockett.

After graduating from college, Florence and Vern married and started their life-long careers as educators and administrators. Florence’s 42-year career was spent in three different schools, with her longest tenure being at the Orland Consolidated school where she retired from after many years of enjoyment. “I loved my kids, we used to have a lot of fun but they did learn,” Florence said with a twinkle in her eye. “The kids knew I loved Peppermint Patties and used to bring them to me. I told them that this could not be used for any special treatment,” she laughed.

Florence, these
fireworks are for you!
In 1971, Florence and Vern welcomed their only child, their daughter Rebecca to the world. A very active couple, they raised Rebecca together as they continued to work in area schools and volunteer at various organizations throughout the community. Vern moved on to become a principal, assistant and finally Superintendent of Schools in the Bucksport School System.

The family purchased their dream home in 1998 on Patten Pond in Surry. They enjoyed spending time outdoors and on the pond. Their sweet life was met with tragedy on Christmas Day 2000 when Vern went out to check the ice on the pond with his snowmobile. When he hadn’t returned home, Florence became concerned. A neighbor noticed that Vern had gone through the ice and lost his life that Christmas morning.

Florence wanted to stay right there at her home because “that is where Vern is.” Florence retired a few years after she lost Vern and remains very active. Florence has been volunteering at the Beth Wright Center for many years. She enjoys working with the others at the Center and likes giving of herself making a difference.

When not at the Center, Florence enjoys living on the lake, kayaking, gardening, going to the YMCA and participating in Aqua Aerobics, and spending quality time with her daughter and her cat.

Happy birthday Florence - Happy 4th of July and this celebration is for you! Thank you for your dedicated service!

Step into Our Summer Kitchen
Over the past few months as well as looking ahead, we have been focusing on healthy, plant-based life styles.

Our Program & Volunteer Coordinator, Amy Kurman has chosen a recipe published in the How-to Companion to the documentary Forks Over Knives cookbook.

No one will know there are any greens in this smoothie unless you tell them. Keep yourself cool and healthy with this:

Chocolate Smoothie
Makes two 12-ounce servings

Ingredients:
3/4 cup unsweetened almond milk
1/2 cup pomegranate juice
6 ounces organic baby spinach, optional
1 frozen banana
Dates (or date paste) to taste
3 Tbsp. raw cocoa powder
2 cups frozen blueberries

Puree all the ingredients in high-powered blender until smooth.

If you make this recipe, capture a photo and send it along to us! Also let us know if you like it.
