First Church News & Updates - July 21, 2017

Capture the Vision
Yesterday, you should have received an e-letter from Dr. Will Cotton about the upcoming visioning process that we are embarking on at First Church. This is going to be an exciting nine
months or so. If you didn't receive the letter, the information will be included in this week's Connections and on the church website.

"Today is gone. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one." Dr. Seuss
We hope to see you on Sunday. Enjoy this First Church news!
This week in worship...
Sermon Series: The Gospel and Dr. Seuss
Last summer, we had fun with  All God's Critters and celebrated the roles that animals played in the Bible. This year, we bring into conversation the teachings of the Bible and the writings of Dr. Seuss in our new sermon series,  The Gospel and Dr. Seuss. You will be surprised at how well they come together. Our children will be doing some of that in Sunday School and it will also become a part of our children's times on Sunday morning.

Will there be a sermon or at least a large part of one be done entirely in rhyme? Will the preachers have any wisdom to spare should they dare to share? And do you have a  cat in the hat hat to wear? Our choirs are working hard on selections from Seussical and the Lorax. Zany series like these have a way of helping us hear the gospel with new ears and allows us another way to invite people to worship services just to experience the novelty of it all.

Sunday, July 23

Sermon Title:  "Biggest Blame Fool"
Scripture:    Matthew 7:1-5
Rev. Katie Meek will preach at the 9:40 worship service and Dr. Will Cotton will preach at the 8:30 and 11 am worship services this Sunday.  The Source , our weekly devotional guide, is available on the church website
Please join us in worship this Sunday at  8:30 am (Sanctuary), 9:40 am (FLC), or 11 am (Sanctuary).
Mission Panama is coming up soon!
Mission Panama
We are passing the chicken buckets & collecting medical supplies this Sunday
We are quickly approaching the date when our Mission Panama team returns to Panama. Fourteen people, including ten medical professionals, will be doing four full days of medical care under the leadership of missionaries Rev. David and Cindy Ceballos. Missionaries are Dr. Richard Anderson, Gwen Anderson (RN), Mendy Barnett (RN), Nathan Barnett (Pharmacist), Dr. Paul Berg, Amy Berg (PA), Jennifer Glasgow, Melissa Hamilton (Nursing Student), Justin Hamilton, Mitzi Laramy (RN), Rev. Katie Meek, Diane Scheler (RN), Ralph Snyder, and Terri Ward (RN).

As one of The Villages, this is a church-wide missional partnership. You are a part of this. So here's how you can help from home!
  • Provide Medical Supplies-Please bring the following supplies to church on July 23 and 30: Vitamins (adult), toothbrushes and toothpaste (children and adult), Children's Benadryl (liquid), saline eye drops, travel bar soap, and combs. All supplies must be in their original wrapping. There will be places to drop your donations.
  • Donate-We will be passing the chicken buckets July 23 and 30 to raise money for children's wheelchairs (approximately $1000) and finishing hardware for our sister church, Punta Delgadita Methodist Church. The church was started by our missionaries and is pastored by missionary Rev. David Ceballos. On August 6, we will be worshipping in the new building. The church was started underneath a tree just four years ago and now they have a two-story building with a worship space, a full kitchen to feed local children, and a place for other Methodist Christians to stay while they're helping to plant a whole district of churches in central Panama. We are so proud!
  • Pray-Pick up a prayer bracelet at church on July 23 and 30, wear it while we're in Panama, August 5-13, and use it as a reminder to pray for Panama every day First Church is there serving!
Have you reserved your photo session?
We are producing a new pictorial directory this year and we want you to be in it!
We have had a few interesting issues with our online signup process, including spotty internet service on Sundays when we tried to sign up folks in the sanctuary and FLC. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Please note this change...Sessions are now open beginning at 10 am on Sunday, August 6. We have photo sessions appointments open August 2 - 6 and August 9. We will also have sessions available September 13 - 17, but those will not be available for signup until more of the August dates are filled.

It is easy to sign up.  Click here to learn more and sign up online. We will also have people available before and after worship services this Sunday, to assist you with the online sign-up. Look for us in the Sanctuary foyer and the Family Life Center east foyer.

Summer Choir
Sing with the Summer Sunday or more than one!
Summer Choir is an opportunity for people to experience leading worship in a relaxed environment.  During July, the choir does not wear robes, and does not have Wednesday night rehearsals. All you have to do is show up in the South Suite at 10:30 am, rehearse the service music for the day, and then lead worship together at the 11 am service.

The dates for Summer Choir are July 16, 23, and 30The choir is full of wonderful people, who share a passion for sharing God's love through music. We hope you will join us!

Any small electric fans, 9 inches, in black or white are wanted. In addition , yarn is needed for a craft class. All colors, kinds and amounts (even small amounts left over from projects) would be appreciated!  Find the boxes in the Sanctuary and FLC foyers (or in the church office) and drop off a fan and/or some yarn.
