Movie in the Park Draws Large Crowd
Last Friday night, I stopped by Whaley Park to check out the season's first Movie in the Park. We weren't sure how the change in venue to the north side of Atherton would affect attendance, but it turned out to be a positive move. A very large crowd enjoyed the featured film "Sing" along with the free popcorn provided by Signal Hill Petroleum. Thank you to Long Beach Parks and Rec staff for organizing and making sure everyone who attended had a great time. The next Movie in the Park will be Friday, July 21st at Orizaba Park.

JetBlue Fined Record-Breaking $168,900 for June Noise Violations
It has become painfully obvious, especially to those living under the flight path, that our "coveted" noise ordinance is not serving its intended purpose. JetBlue violated the 11:00 pm curfew 31 times (every night on average) and the 10:00 pm curfew 48 times last month. This clearly indicates the fine structure is not an adequate deterrent to violating the curfew. For that reason, I will be introducing a city council agenda item in the very near future to examine this issue.

For a full report on the June noise violations, check this link. Thank you to Ryan McMullan, Airport Operation Specialist - Noise Analyst II, for this information.

Porsche Palooza!
Sunday morning, I headed down to Gladstone's at the Pine Street Pier to support one of our premier CD4 businesses, Circle Porsche. In conjunction with the Transpacific Yacht Race, Circle Porsche hosted an inaugural Porsche Palooza event featuring 50 vintage Porsches and a new car display. It was an incredibly beautiful setting for some incredibly beautiful automobiles.

Celebrating the 4th in the Fourth
There were multiple 4th of July celebrations throughout CD4 including block parties, bike parades and neighborhood gatherings. I was able to stop by many of the block parties and deliver "Fireworks are Illegal" lawn signs. Thanks to all the organizers and participants for making it a great day. Happy 4th! and Go Fourth!

Next on the Council Agenda: July 11

The city council meeting is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. in the council chambers on the ground floor of City Hall, located at 333 W. Ocean Blvd. City council meetings are broadcast live online and are also available on Channel 3 for Charter cable subscribers and Channel 21 for FIOS subscribers. Here is one of the topics that will be discussed at Tuesday's city council meeting:
  • Council discussion on requesting a report from the City Manager on the fiscal impact of having a specific contact number for all city services. A specific number would bring efficiency in correcting matters that relate to trash pick-ups, graffiti removal, and street sweeping.
  • Council discussion on creating a business retention team, consisting of local and state agencies, as well as executives from Molina Healthcare.  Molina recently transferred over 400 employees to San Pedro.
  • Council discussion of review/request of the City Manager to direct Parks and Rec to prepare a report that outlines the current and long-term deferred park maintenance issues. This includes graffiti removal, trash pick-up and proposals for partnerships for park support.
This is just a small selection of the topics to be cover at next week's city council meeting. Public comment is also available. The entire agenda can be found here. To see the schedule and agenda for all upcoming city meetings, click here.

And Finally
Kinney Shoes  Traffic Circle Development 60 Years Ago
With all the new business development going on east of the traffic circle, it's interesting to note the history of retail development in the area. Sixty years ago, in the summer of 1957, a new Kinney Shoes building was under construction on the south side of the circle. As shown in the rendering below, it was a mid-century modern design, and nationally, it was the the 406th Kinney Shoes store to open. The nice part about this story is that the building still exists today at 4290 E. PCH. It is now home to two businesses, UFC Gym and Port City Tattoo. I have spoken to both both business owners, Raul Anaya of UFC and Tom Moser of Port City, and asked if they knew about the former tenant. Both Raul and Tom are fully aware of the building's history and appreciate its architectural significance.

100 Days of Summer
Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine encourages everyone to "stay and play" in Long Beach during the "100 Days of Summer" from Memorial Day to Labor Day. There is no reason to travel far or spend a lot of money to have fun with your family and friends.

Free concerts and movies, free family recreation programs, and activities at El Dorado Nature Center, Homeland Cultural Center, Rancho Los Alamitos and Rancho Los Cerritos are scheduled all summer long. There is also spontaneous fun available like biking, hiking, golf, tennis, kayaking, swimming and free drop-in youth and teen programs at local parks.

The City of Long Beach and the Long Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau will post hundreds of activities on www.100DaysofSummer.org to make planning each of your 100 days easy and fun.
El Dorado Nature Center
Looking for a bit of nature in the middle of the city? Nestled between the San Gabriel River and the 605 Freeway, El Dorado Nature Center is an oasis of natural habitat, offering visitors the chance to escape the hustle and bustle of the urban environment.

The 105 acres that make up the Nature Center grounds provide sanctuary for animals and plant life. Two miles of dirt trails and a ΒΌ mile paved trail wind around two lakes, a stream and forested areas. At the entrance, cross over the wooden bridge that spans the lake and you'll find yourself on a small island that houses the Visitor Center, containing educational displays, art gallery and a small gift shop offering environmentally themed books and gifts.
