MEDIA ADVISORY

Athens Area Community Foundation to host public convening on the future of
post-secondary education and employment in Georgia

What: To address two of the biggest economic threats facing the state of Georgia today, improving college access and affordability and meeting the needs of our workforce, this convening will gather civic, education and political leaders with members of the local community to raise awareness and foster ongoing discussion necessary to create lasting educational and employment solutions.

When: Monday, July 30 th , 10:00am to 11:30am

Where: Oconee County Civic Center, 2661 Hog Mountain Rd, Watkinsville, GA 30677

Visuals: Community leaders, education leaders, and local citizens

Why: By the year 2025, 60 percent of jobs in Georgia will require some type of post-secondary education, such as a graduate certificate, an associate’s degree, or bachelor’s degree. Currently, only about 47 percent of Georgia’s potential workforce meets that educational criteria.
To address this, Governor Nathan Deal launched Complete College Georgia in 2011 with the goal of closing the talent gap by raising students’ post-secondary school completion rate. This will help meet the ultimate goal of 250,000 additional credentialed or degreed employment candidates by the year 2025.
To meet this challenge, community and education leaders must arm themselves with knowledge of the opportunities and barriers to post-secondary education and find ways to support students on their way to the workforce. One component of the solution is gap funding, money that can help to keep in school the approximately 15,000 students annually who are removed from University System of Georgia (USG) and Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) classes due to unpaid balances of less than $1,200 per student.
