I Knew We Were Good, But...
By Stacy Zimmerman, Speedster editor, [email protected]

Here at AACA Headquarters, we hear from our members all the time about how great AACA is. We answer phone calls and meet with visitors to our office on a daily basis - all of whom tell us how much they love reading Antique Automobile magazine or how much fun they just had at the museum. I always love hearing the stories about how they just got back from their first AACA meet and it was the best car show they've ever attended. Well, now we know we aren't the only ones who think this way...

NEW Member Benefit: Discounted Rates at La Quinta Inn & Suits

AACA is continually looking to offer our members more and more benefits that save you money and time. With all of the traveling we do for meets, tours and other activities, choosing La Quinta Inn & Suites as a preferred lodging partner seemed like a perfect match.

All current AACA members can now receive preferred discounted rates at all La Quinta Inn & Suites. These discounted rates are not limited to just AACA event related stays, you get the discounts anytime you stay - business travel, family vacations, etc.

Reservations can be made in three ways:
  • Visit LQ.com and enter AAUTO1 in the promotional code box
  • Contact the reservations line at 800-SLEEPLQ (753-3757) AND request the Antique Automobile Club of America discount
  • Contact the hotel directly and request the Antique Automobile Club of America discount

Click here for the Antique Automobile Club of America Custom Booking Flyer with our unique booking instructions.

Click here for step-by-step online booking instructions.

You may also want to enroll in the La Quinta Inn & Suites guest loyalty program, La Quinta Returns. This program will reward you with fast rewards, fast top-tier status and members-only benefits for your stays at La Quinta Inns & Suites locations.

NEW Member Benefit: Nationwide Insurance Program Discounts

You may have already or will soon be receiving communication from Nationwide Insurance. AACA has entered into an affinity relationship with them, much like the program with MBNA many years ago. The program could not be simpler...

Because of this new relationship, Nationwide is now allowed to offer special rates on different insurance products (NOT antique car insurance) that will possibly save both current and new Nationwide customers money. This includes special rates for regular car insurance, etc. It is that simple - just because you are a current AACA member!

We promise that no one will call you  unless you apply for a rate. Already some current Nationwide customers who are AACA members have taken advantage of their discount. If YOU decide you want to compare rates, you simply contact them and let them know you are an AACA member! Details about this new program will be sent to you in the mail and through email. Again, there is no obligation. We are just trying to save you money and support club activities.

Don't worry, there will not be excessive emails or letters to you - just a few to let you know about the program. In return, Nationwide will be making a substantial donation to the club which will help us to continue to provide you with the best of services.

We are always looking for REAL benefits for our members and this one has the opportunity to save our supporters real dollars and with a company that is well-respected. That is a win for all of us.

Family History: Great, Great Uncle Andy King & His Mystery Car
By M.R. Simpers, Canaveral Region AACA, Cocoa, FL, [email protected]

The man riding shotgun is my great, great Uncle Andy, and he loved baseball and car racing. His name was Willis Andrew King (b: June 1881, White Plains, Ga. - d: February 1958 Jacksonville, Fla.). By profession he was a railroad engineer and later in his life the "Road Foreman of Engines" for the Seaboard Railroad out of Plant City, Fla. Around 1938, he was the first engineer in Florida to operate one of those new diesel electric engines.

I know early in his career (1901-1907) he was in Durham, Greensboro and then Spencer, N.C., with the Southern Railway. From 1907-1921, he was in Plant City, Fla., and he moved to Jacksonville in 1921.

There are no notations on the below photo indicating a date or location. To me, it'd be nice to think he was on the sands at Ormond Beach. I place this photo around 1910 to 1915.

The engine appears to be a big 4 with exposed lifters. A review of my copies of the NACC Hand Book of Automobiles for 1915-1921 does not reveal any hoods with round holes. The rear cantilevered spring shackles may prove to be a good identifier.

In my quest to discover my family history, information about this photo continues to elude me. I'm wondering if any of my fellow AACA members could help me identify this vehicle? Any ideas on the location or other folks in the photo would be great, too! Maybe, with your help, I can finally solve this mystery?

Meet the Interns!
By Matthew Hocker, Assistant Librarian, [email protected], with a little help from the interns

Back in April, the AACA Library received a massive truckload of automotive racing material. This generous donation represents the life work of Don O'Reilly. O'Reilly was the editor of Speed Age magazine and helped bring auto racing into the mainstream. Since then, we have been hard at work processing the Don O'Reilly collection and have come across a ton of cool items, such as early NASCAR programs, Indianapolis 500 press kits and even an early autographed photo of the late Carroll Shelby!

We have made significant headway with the Don O'Reilly collection thanks in large part to extra help. Our summer interns have been hard at work "chipping away" at the collection box-by-box. Who are they, you might ask? Let's find out...

Preston Rose
I am a student at Pennsylvania College of Technology, studying Automotive Restoration Technology. This summer, I interned at the AACA Library and Research Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Some of the things I did at the library during my time there were researching and answering questions sent in by AACA members and cataloging new materials. While I was in Hershey, I also worked at Rick Hoover's Restorations nearby. I performed bodywork on the AACA Bookmobile, a 1955 Chevrolet truck. I am now spending the second half of my summer in Ohio, working with West Peterson, editor of Antique Automobile magazine. I have been photographing cars for articles over the past several months and now have the opportunity to work with the editing and layout of the magazine.

Ryan Bollinger
My name is Ryan Bollinger and I am 20 years old from Mount Joy, Pennsylvania. I currently go to the Pennsylvania College of Technology for Business Management and Marketing. I just graduated in May 2016 with my Associates in Automotive Restoration. I have had a passion for cars since I can remember, going on rides with my father and grandfather in their cars or being out in the garage with them. My passion is pre-war cars especially the really early stuff. I also collect antique toys; I have been doing that since I was about 8 years old. Anything from pressed steel toys to cast iron, pedal cars and tin wind-ups; I collect it all.

This summer I have been interning at the AACA Library and Research Center. What I have been doing there is helping organize the Don O'Reilly collection, doing research requests for customers and helping out with The Elegance at Hershey when needed. I have had a lot of fun working here so far and have learned a lot from it. Not only have I learned about what goes on in a library; I have also learned a lot from doing research on all sorts of different cars.

Thank you, Preston & Ryan!

Reliability Tour
November 5-11, 2016
Savannah, GA

The Antique Automobile Club of America and the Horseless Carriage Club of America join forces every other year to sponsor the Reliability Tour. The roots of this event stem back to 1903 when an organization was formed to determine just how "reliable" these new-fangled horseless carriages were for the buying public. Today the tradition carries on, with 75 to 100 of these pre-1916 vehicles meeting "somewhere in the US" to tour a particular area for a week.

This year's tour is limited to 75 vehicles manufactured prior to January 1, 1916, and hosted by the Savannah Region AACA. The tour will start on Hilton Head Island, SC, in time for the Concours d'Elegance and move to Savannah for 5 days of beautiful sightseeing, fun motoring and, of course, some great food.

For more information or a registration form, please visit www.savaaca.org or contact Ralph Tolman, Chairman, at [email protected] or (912) 313-0598.
