S C H O O L TIME IS NEAR
Any parent knows that back-to-school shopping is a yearly ritual whether you like it or not. Families with school aged children are expected to spend $635 for back-to-school shopping this year.
While summer is here in America, school is still in session in Africa. The new school year begins in January and ends in November with month long breaks in April and August. In Malawi, elementary students can go to school for free, but they must pay for uniforms and school supplies. Unfortunately, this means that there may be up to 200 children in one classroom with little to no furniture, chalk boards, or even a pencil. Sometimes you even see them meeting under a mango tree as there is no space left in classrooms.
In Zimbabwe, starting with Kindergarten, all students have to pay school fees to attend school. School fees for elementary school average about $100 a term whereas for high school the fees are about $200 a term. In Malawi where the average wage is about $35 per month and in Zimbabwe is about $50 per month, this is a huge sacrifice. Unfortunately, that means that many children, especially girls and/or orphans cannot go to school as their parents or guardians cannot afford to send them...leading to a continuation of poverty.
Fingerprints is dedicated to educating and skills training that provides a future for the orphans.

US Ambassador to Malawi, Jeanine Jackson
and her husband visited Kondanani in April. She gave high praise for the work of Fingerprints across Africa and our partnership with Kondanani. She and her team were able to see first hand the positive impact this is making on the community of Naisi with the preschool and empowerment efforts.
