Looking for a good book? Here are some that JEL staff have recently enjoyed! Clicking on the title will take you right to

Opening Thurs, July 6 at 6:30 pm

Please join us in welcoming Piyali Samant and Greg Hamilton, two local artists who are displaying their work at the library this month! An opening reception will be held on Thursday, July 6th at 6:30 pm, all welome!

Piyali:
"I grew up in the historic city of Ahmedabad, 350 miles west of Mumbai in India. By age 15 I was drawing portraits of people, animals, nudes and developed a great love for free hand Henna patterns.

I graduated as a computer engineer and came to United States for a Masters in IT and later an MBA. I worked in IT management most of my professional life. Through it all, I continued painting and exhibiting art, but not as often and as much as I would have liked. A year after completing my MBA at age 33, I decided that a day spent not painting was a day wasted. On April 10, 2014 I left my career in IT to pursue my life-long dream of being a daily painter. I am a contemporary artist. I paint daily out of my studio in Auburn, MA. Oil is my first love, but I also enjoy working with graphite, charcoal and ink. Most of my pieces are commissioned portraits of people and pets created using photo references of the subjects. Other commissions in my portfolio include semi-abstract florals, athlete figurative paintings."

Greg:
"My painting has began taking on this performative/dialogic character with Craigslist Portrait Roulette (2013) where I offered free portraits to any stranger brave enough to come to my warehouse painting studio in Webster Square and pose for three hours. Participants were able to keep their favorite portrait, and the ones they did not select were completed by me and comprised the series. This project inspired the first Worcester Portrait Exchange, where 100 individuals were paired with a stranger and tasked with creating, and gifting a portrait to each other.  Results included photographs, paintings, drawings and sculpture, and even installation.

I am inspired by improvisational nonprofessional forms of creativity. I believe that Worcester's unique character is best served by an "Arts Scene" that is welcoming, informal, participatory and experimental. I hope to promote the idea that a local artist has "made it" not necessarily when their work is saleable to collectors for high sums (an unlikely goal in a city without a significant collector market) but when their practice influences and invigorates the communities in which they live and work.
I am currently working to combine my existing visual art activities with an emerging community art practice. In the coming years I hope to develop new cultural projects that operate at the intersection of disciplines; combining art, ethnographic research and participatory experience design."
