About the Cause: The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) focuses on finding cures and ensuring accessibility of treatment for patients suffering from various types of blood cancers. As there are no preventative measures or early screening available, LLS directs its attention towards promising research. In addition to successful research projects, they are the leading provider of information, support, and education to patients, families, and healthcare professionals. Getting Involved: "In March my mother was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), a white blood cell cancer characterized by increased and unregulated myeloid cells in the bone marrow which accumulate in the blood. Months before her diagnosis, she exhibited symptoms that were believed to have been from a severe ongoing flu, until tests were ordered and the real illness was discovered. It has been determined that reciprocal translocation occurred causing two of her chromosomes to break apart and rearrange resulting in CML. Since blood cancers require lifelong treatment, LLS has been a valuable resource for ongoing education and support. It has been exceptionally helpful for finding resources to offset the cost of monthly chemotherapy, as insurance only covers a very small percentage. My family and I will be participating in the LLS Light The Night Walk fundraiser on Sept. 25th in Delaware Park as Kathy's Kancer Krushers as we do our part to help raise money to fund education and research for treatment and cures." |
