Danforth's Growing Community:
Loan Opportunities for Artists

Traditionally museums have focused on historically important art, but that model is changing. Here at the Danforth, contemporary artists play an increasingly important role. While we display their work and acquire it for our permanent collection, we also welcome artists as insightful viewers and as teachers and students in studio art classes. More than one third of our members are working artists, and from now through August 5, visitors will be able to consider the creativity of members showcased in our current Off the Wall and Community of Artists shows.

"Perhaps by [Cody] Hartley's seasoned eye, personal preferences or pure instinct, this Off the Wall is one of the strongest, most exciting exhibits shown in the Danforth over recent years," writes Chris Bergeron in a review in MetroWest Daily News. "...the paintings, prints, photos, installations, and other boundary-bending works are fresh, striking, and often dazzling to the eye and imagination." Reviews like this and in Art New England pay tribute to the highly talented artists engaged in this Museum.

Milestones: Dorothy Thompson

It is with deep sadness that we note the passing of Dorothy Thompson, an accomplished writer, collector, curator, and artist who inspired continuing consideration of Boston Expressionism - not only at the Danforth, but in museums throughout New England. By interviewing and writing about Hyman Bloom, she created a body of primary research that informs serious scholars.

As a curator and collector, she insured a future for painters by creating exhibitions and contributing their work to museums. Intensively engaged in the visualization of human experience, Thompson also created and exhibited her own work. We greatly appreciate her contributions, as well as her warm and generous spirit. She will be missed.

A memorial celebration of Dorothy Thompson will be held on July 21 at 2 p.m. Click here for more information.

The Danforth - A Good Investment

Even in an uncertain economy, many see the Danforth as a good investment. That's why we see members increasing their memberships, enrolling in studio art classes, and adding to their donations. As well, our corporate sponsorships are as strong as ever.

In yet another vote of confidence, the Town of Framingham has responded favorably to the Danforth's proposal made for its use of the Jonathan Maynard Building, located on the historic town green in Framingham Center. We expect to enter formal negotiations soon. Read about our progress in our next newsletter. Very exciting!

Even more exciting is a recent $150,000 challenge pledge to kick-start our 2012 Summer Annual Fund Campaign, and we need your help! Thanks to the vision of one individual, all contributions made to our Annual Appeal before August 31 will be applied to meet this 1:1 challenge match. Gifts made now are doubly significant, allowing $500 gifts to grow into $1,000; $2,500 to grow into $5,000; and so forth.

Teen Intern assisting with Summer Arts for Children

There is still time to sign up for  summer art classes for all ages and levels. Classes continue through August 17.

Teens at the Danforth

There are so many ways for teens to participate in the arts at the Danforth! In addition to our Teen Docent program, teens can participate as School of Art interns or take classes to sharpen skills and build portfolios for college. Our summer Teen Classes are designed to give teens strong foundations in observational drawing and painting, figure and portrait drawing and wheelthrowing, and to encourage them to experiment with illustration, printmaking, graphic novels, and mixed media.

This summer's Danforth teen classes are taught by experienced artists and college art professors, giving our students a strong pre-college experience. In addition to the Danforth, our summer instructors also teach at Mass College of Art and Design, School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Rhode Island College, Montserrat College of Art, Framingham State University, and others.

High school and college interns in the school assist with our Summer Arts for Children program. This summer we have 17 interns on board, and it is wonderful to see how our young artists look to them for guidance.

Robert Freeman and Susan Heideman

Robert Freeman

Artist and Instructor

In studio three, Robert Freeman just finished teaching his first class at the Danforth Art School. Ten teenagers participated in his Observational Drawing class, and some of them experienced drawing for the first time. These students progressed a lot in just one afternoon. In fact, Freeman is so proud of the results, he asked to have his picture taken in front of their work.

Freeman has been showing nationally for over 30 years, and is in the collections of the National Center for African American Artists, Boston Public Library, Brown University, deCordova Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He earned his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from Boston University, where he studied under Reed Kay and Philip Guston. He was the first artist-in-residence at the Noble and Greenough School, in Dedham, where he taught for 25 years.
