July 2017 Newsletter

Hi All!

We hope you've been enjoying your summer so far. In this edition, we'll be highlighting two clients with some major milestones, letting you in on some of Katie's Insights and information on Study Group One, and introducing Bethany Celio, our new Marketing & Outreach Coordinator.

Congratulations to Village Hearth Cohousing and Fair Oaks EcoHousing on Major Milestones!

Village Hearth Cohousing Receives City Council Rezone and Annexation Approval

We would like to give a big congratulations to Village Hearth Cohousing on their recent City Council approval!! On June 19th, 2017, the Durham City Council approved (with a 7-0 vote) a rezone and annexation to pave the way for the first LGBT-focused 55+ cohousing community in the United States.

The rezone and annexation approval is a big milestone for the community, paving the way for Village Hearth to tackle the next phase of development—growing their membership and completing construction documents, so they can start construction in Spring 2018. The community recently completed a set of design workshops with Chuck Durrett of McCamant & Durrett Architects for their single-story cottages on the 15-acre wooded property.

Noting the need for inclusive and connected neighborhoods, co-founder Pat McAulay says, “It took many of us a lot of time to come out; many LGBTs wind up going back into the closet to safely get the care they need as they age. We want to be able to live comfortably, without having to hide any aspect of ourselves.”

The community will be holding a celebration and unveiling their designs on July 18th!

Fair Oaks EcoHousing: Construction Loan Approval, Only 2 Townhomes Left, and Great Investment Opportunities

We're very pleased to announce another milestone: Fair Oaks EcoHousing is officially moving forward with a construction loan! CoHousing Solutions took the lead in helping the community to find financing. Katie says, "I was surprised how hard it was to find construction financing for a nearly sold-out project. The terms for this loan are tough, but when I talked with other developers in the region, it actually looks pretty good." Keep your eye out for their Groundbreaking Announcement in late summer/early fall of this year.

Fair Oaks EcoHousing near Sacramento, CA has only two townhomes left! Both are 2-story, 4-bedroom townhomes, which have one bedroom downstairs, three bedrooms upstairs, and three bathrooms. Click here to see the floor plan and learn more

Additionally, the community is looking for investments and offering attractive returns (potentially up to 29% - 39% return on your investment over approximately 2 years). You can help us continue this positive momentum by considering investing in our environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable community. This is an opportunity to put your money behind your values; please feel free to pass this on to anyone else you think might be interested. If you or anyone you know is interested in investing, please contact Roz Eliaser at (916) 599-6549 or email [email protected] so we can send you more details about this opportunity.
Katie's Insights
Living in Nevada City Cohousing, I often receive emails asking for requests from the community. Recently one of our members put out a request to the community for helping her to move a shed; it happened to be a holiday, and she hoped maybe 4 or 5 people could help. The next day more than 10 community members showed up with tools and happily lent a hand in moving her shed!

"At any 'normal' neighborhood it would take days of advance notice and special arrangements for folks to show up for a project like that. Here it's standard practice."

This is just one example of the many benefits provided by living in cohousing. Click here to explore more!
Welcoming Bethany Celio, Our New Marketing & Outreach Coordinator
We are pleased to welcome Bethany to the CoHousing Solutions team as Marketing & Outreach Coordinator. She recently graduated with honors from UC Davis with a degree in Sustainable Environmental Design and is excited to be part of the U.S. cohousing community as a whole. She learned about cohousing a few years ago and ever since has been extremely interested in helping to grow the movement as best she can.

If your group needs help with anything related to marketing, media, and outreach, she's your gal. She can craft an effective website for your group, create newsletters, work on social media platforms, design advertisements, or anything else you can think of!

"Study Group 1: Aging Successfully"

Online Facilitator Training

Wednesdays: Oct 11 - Dec 13, 2017

9:30am - 12:30pm PST (3 hrs)

The class will meet online through weekly group conversations and check-ins

Become a key facilitator in inspiring and empowering seniors to:

  • Age in place successfully.
  • Understand the economics of senior living choices.
  • Take charge of co-care, co-healing, and outside assistance.
  • Strengthen the bond between body and soul, individual and community.
  • Appreciate the interlocking roles of community life and quality of life.
  • Work effectively to achieve common goals.
  • Create a meaningful living legacy that transcends the generations.

If you are interested in facilitating a change in attitude and seeing proactive results in your community, this is your chance. In our years of experience, we have found that the more trained SG1 facilitators there are in one area, the more momentum and support each has to create senior cohousing for themselves and others. In the vein of creating community, the training is about creating a web of resources for everyone to take advantage of.
