From Our Pastors
Rev. Ben Roberts

"All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever."  (1Peter 1:24-25 ESV)

"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change." (James 1:17 ESV)

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." (Hebrews 13:8 ESV)

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
I can't remember where I read it, but consider this quote: "Change is happening so fast we can't keep up with it." I can think of many things that can apply.
  • Technological. Got a new iPhone or Galaxy? Don't get too used to it. You'll be wanting its replacement in just a few months.
  • Climate change. Ice melting. Crazy storms. Snow in Summer. Heat waves. Sometimes all in the same week.
  • Culture change. What with the global economy, immigration, terrorism, politics, etc., no wonder everyone is wondering how we are to live and work together as a society.
Change is happening and it is happening fast. Often, we can't keep up.
So we look to the church for stability. And what do we find? Change. Consider these changes that I have seen happen during my time at Summit of Peace:
  • Contemporary worship service.
  • One day VBS with the rest of it spread out during Summer Sunday School.
  • Cambodia Mission Trip.
  • Life Group Ministry.
  • "Grow in Faith, Share the Faith, Live the Faith".
  • Technology in the sanctuary, fellowship hall and classrooms.
  • Members joining, members leaving, members born, members entering eternity.
  • And more...

Save the Date: Structure Summit of Summit

Sept 30th 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

If you sit on one of our church boards, have been to a voters' meeting lately, or attended the post Best Practices presentation, then you have no doubt heard me babbling on about governance and our church.  In particular you may have heard me talking about policy governance vs. traditional governance, and how a change may be necessitated by our growth to ensure that Summit of Peace can stay responsive to both its membership and community.
If that all just sounds like so much Greek to you, or if you just want to learn more, please go ahead and block off Saturday, September 30th from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on your calendars now.  That day we will have an expert on Lutheran church governance presenting and answering your questions about the whats, whens, hows and whys of policy governance.  Whether or not to move forward with a change in governance structure will be on the agenda at the following voters' meeting, so I encourage you all to attend, ask questions and provide feedback.
I know that's a large time commitment but I think it's an important topic and we're giving you lots of advance notice.  Oh, and did I mention we'll feed you?
in His peace,
President, Summit of Peace

The Intersection of Church & State: July Adult Bible Study

Beginning July 2nd in the Gathering Grounds Fellowship Hall join us for the next
Summer Blockbuster Bible study: The Intersection of Church & State.  In the U.S. the relationship between church and state is an energetic one. Voices and viewpoints line up across the spectrum. Some would argue from history there should be a "wall of separation" between the two. Others maintain co-existence is not only necessary and inevitable, but can lead to positive results.

In real life, church and state do operate in similar spheres-both conflictingly and cooperatively. See how they interconnect in The Intersection of Church & State

While some may propose a church and state separation is feasible, breaking this long-standing liaison is not likely. Though each entity has its separate function-the state to "promote the general welfare" of its citizens, the church to deal with spiritual concerns in this world, with an eye to the next-in reality they work together.

The Intersection of Church & State examines the dynamic give-and-take relationship that has marked the crossroads of church and state in this country. Though roadblocks are frequent where the two meet, there is still tremendous potential for cooperative work to be done. Using expert commentary from academics, church and civic leaders, agency professionals and others, this program underscores the healthy collaboration between church and state in caring for the needy, settling refugees, child adoption, chaplain services and more. It will also consider how these historical church and state partnerships are jeopardized. In the end, it will suggest a far superior metaphor in describing the church-state relationship is not one using a wall or barrier but, instead, an intersection, which benefits us all.

The Rev. Gregory P. Seltz is the Speaker of The Lutheran HourĀ® radio program. As host of The Intersection of Church & State, Seltz assists viewers in understanding the multi-layered discourse existing between church and state in the U.S. and how this relationship can be a fruitful force for good to those in need.

Happy 4th of July!

The Office will be closed Monday & Tuesday, July 3rd & 4th. We will resume normal business hours on Wednesday July 5th. Enjoy your weekend!

Thornton Paint-a-Thone

July 22, 2017 - 8 am

The Thornton Paint-A-Thon is an event in which community members paint the
homes of low-income disabled or  elderly Thornton residents. Volunteers are essential to the event's success. By volunteering time and energy to paint the homes, volunteers make it possible to offer free painting to people who do not have the financial or physical means to do so on their own. Teams of 10  to 25 people are needed to paint each home. Help Summit form a team to  paint a home on Saturday , July 22, 2017.

Event Day
Volunteer groups are provided with lunch, as well as the paint and supplies needed to complete their project. Brothers Redevelopment staff will provide instructions to the volunteers on the day of the event about what is to be accomplished on the home . City and Brothers Redevelopment staff will frequently stop by sites and help troubleshoot any issues. After the project is complete , volunteers will clean up the site and consolidate the trash, tools, and unused supplies into one location at the front of the house so city staff can pick up these items.

Here's what last year's recipient had to say:
Last year in July, your team participated in our Paint-a-thon event, helping Isidro Franco paint his house. I wanted to let you all know that we recently connected with Isidro Franco's daughter, Jeanette, and she informed us that her father passed away last year shortly after the paint-a-thon event.  She expressed that the event was one of the last happy memories she had with her dad because he enjoyed having the people over that were helping and he wanted to grill corn on the cob for all of them.  She wanted to thank everyone that was involved in the PAT for your hard work last year.

Volunteers Needed
We need volunteers on our team! You don't have to be an expert to make a difference in someone's life and Live the Faith. Help us serve our city by volunteering. You can sign-up underneath the bulletin boards or you can sign-up by clicking  HERE. (You must be 14 or older to volunteer...great for volunteer hours for High School Students!)

Food For Hope is distributing food bags on Fridays for the children to have good weekend meals. The meals and food bags are given to children at the Renaissance Apts which is owned by the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless.
The children have said how much this food means to them and their families and how it helps them get through the week.
Our food packing date is Monday July 10th at 5pm at Summit of Peace.  The distribution dates are on Fridays:  July 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th and August 4th and 11th.  The bags will be picked up at Summit of Peace at 12:45pm and taken to the Renaissance Apts with distribution from 1:15-2:00pm.
