July is National Parks & Recreation Month
Discover the Power of Play & Adventure!

This July, discover the power of play and adventure! For children and adults, play is a vital part of our mental well-being, physical health and personal interactions. During Park and Recreation Month, the National Recreation and Park Association is challenging everyone to get their play on with their local parks and recreation.

Whether it's summer camp, an adult sports league, exploring a trail, Zumba class, meeting friends on the playground, playing cards in the park, or discovering nature - parks and play go hand in hand.

Did you know 1 hour of daily vigorous play provides intense skill learning? Kids who play outside also have better vision than those who play inside. If youth are active 25 minimum a day 3 days a week: 243,830 fewer overweight/obese youth and $20 billion in saved medical costs!

There are so many great reasons to get outside and play, especially in our great state of Colorado!

Are you ready for the August Enrollment Season?

Whether you see a large increase in your enrollment in August, or you are accepting children year round, having a solid plan to convert your inquiries to enrollments is necessary. Here are some tips for taking parents from the first contact with you through a new family orientation. When families feel supported during the transition to a new school or program, they are more likely to stay!

1. Inquiries - make sure whoever answers the phone has had training on how to take an inquiry call. Always follow-up with inquiries no more than 3 days after the initial contact to see if they have any additional questions.

 2. Follow-Up - It takes an average of 10 'touches' to convert an inquiry into an enrollment. A touch can be anything from a phone call, an e-mail with an interesting article of information for parents, an invitation to an upcoming event, or a postcard thanking them for visiting your program. Each 'touch' should be caring, warm and supportive of the families making them feel like they are a part of your community before they enroll.

 3. Intake / New Family Orientation - Schedule a time to meet with the family once they have decided to enroll with you. Go over with them the important policies and procedures they need to know, review the handbook and other parent resources, take them on a tour of their new classroom, and be available to answer questions. It is also at this time you will discuss any medical/health/behavioral concerns that may need to be addressed. Make sure families have all the paperwork they need to return to you on the child's first day of school.

*Pro-Tip - use this as an opportunity to use your school logo to create an image. Have folders, business cards and enrollment paperwork printed with the program logo and present this to parents in a clean, professional way.

4. The Child's First Day - welcome the family with a sign, a snack or something else to make them feel special and wanted. Make sure the classroom is ready for the child - cubby labels, name tags, space for diapers/creams/sunscreen/water bottles/ etc..., attendance sheets updated with the child's name, important family and medical information given to the teachers. Anyone should be able to greet the family at the door and help them put their things away without issue.

This is, of course no guarantee that you will covert every inquiry into an enrollment. Families are all unique, including their needs, so the inquiry process should reflect your program culture and expectations so the parents who come into your care are just the right fit for you and for them. We all know that consistent, high quality child care is vital to the healthy development of children. Reducing turnover through a well-planned inquiry and orientation process will help families and children obtain stability during these critical years.

Children play in Medano Creek at Great Sand Dunes National Park

The National Park Service turned 100 years old in 2016! Celebrate the start of the next century by visiting a park in 2017. During 10 days of the year, all National Park Service sites that charge an entrance fee will offer free admission.

Mark your calendar for these entrance fee-free dates for the remainder of 2017:

  • September 30: National Public Lands Day
  • November 11-12: Veterans Day Weekend
Here in Colorado we have four national parks - Rocky Mountain, Mesa Verde, Great Sand Dunes and Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Rocky Mountain is Colorado's most visited park and also the 4th most popular park in the country! This park is popular for elk watching and sits between Estes Park and Grand Lake. Mesa Verde contains 600 dwellings and is a wonderful site for kids to learn about the Pueblo people.  The Great Sand Dunes is a fun park for families to hike, sled and sand-board as well as play in the shallow creek and camp. Black Canyon is a park best visited by expert climbers, hikers and kayakers.

Get out and explore one of these parks with your children and help them realize how lucky we are to live in Colorado!
