California Victims Compensation Program

In June, the Domestic Violence Center was lucky enough to sponsor training for California Victims Compensation Program hosted by Crime Survivors Inc.

CalVCP Mission: To provide responsive financial compensation to victims of crime through a stable Restitution Fund.

CalVCP is not funded by taxpayers; it is paid by criminal offender fines. Not every victim applies for CalVCP so there is currently $12 million in an account that is ready to be paid out to victims. A victim can be assisted financially up to $63,000, depending on the case. The assistance may be used for: medical treatment, dental treatment, mental health services, funeral and burial, income loss, home security.

In order to be eligible, the victim must have done one or more of the following and may not have been involved with the crime: report the crime, apply within 3 years of the crime or obtain a temporary restraining order.

Victims may be provided up to $2,00 per household in order to assist in relocating. The victim may receive assistance within 3-5 days in order to relocate, only if the victim has provided CalVCP with all the necessary information needed.

Hello Friends!

Happy 4th of July!  Summer is here and the Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita has a lot going on this summer!  Take a look at what we've been up to and see what's coming up next!

Meet New Board of Directors President Jean Morrison!

The Domestic Violence Center entered a new year in July 0f 2014 and the agency is encouraged by a new Board of Directors! Our Executive Board consists of Jean Morrison as President, Sue Reynolds as Vice President, Rob Stern as Treasurer, and Barbara Cochran as Board Secretary.

Meet our new President!!

Jean Morrison is a 4th Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo and is the owner and Chief Instructor of Bright Star ATA Martial Arts.  She has extensive experience assisting survivors of sexual and domestic violence through self-defense, creative expression, and public education programs.  Jean's primary goal is to lead DVC's Board of Directors in the creation and implementation of a strategic vision and planning process, working to strengthen the capacity of the board and its members in support of that vision and plan.

Getting ready to test for her 5th Degree Black Belt, Jean Morrison is just as dedicated to assisting others in optimizing health and wellness.  Additionally, Jean is known for the establishment of programs that develop future leaders, create inclusive and supportive training environments for people with special needs and physical challenges, and for at-risk and low-income youth.  About 60% of the students receiving service through Bright Star ATA are in the high to low functioning range of the Autism Spectrum.

A leader in violence prevention education, Jean Morrison received the honor of Woman of the Year from the Los Angeles County Commission for Women for the establishment of the Ending Violence Against Women Conference at California State University, Northridge.  Jean also co-founded the Los Angeles Clothesline Project to raise awareness about sexual and domestic violence.

Prior to opening Bright Star ATA, Jean consulted for domestic violence shelters and sexual assault crisis centers in Los Angeles and throughout California on event planning, public relations and media.  She looks forward to working with Executive Director, Linda Davies, in furthering the work of the DVC in Santa Clarita and beyond.
