From Our
Landscape Architect:
" It's dirt..it's soil...it's compost? "
by Janielle Guzinski

It's dirt..it's soil...it's compost?

There are so many different soils out there that it can be difficult to choose what to put in your garden. Here are some basic tips.

See if Reading the Bag Helps
Some packagings are self-explanatory, like azalea soil should be used when you plant azaleas or other acid loving plants. Many vegetable soils will say that they have slow-release fertilizers high in that middle number, phosphorus, to promote flower and fruit growth. And keep an eye out for soils with very fast burning nutrients that may have a warning to let them incorporate into your soil for a month or two before planting so you don't burn your plants.

Organic Content is Our Friend
Here is Galveston with the nutrient-poor, sandy soils organic matter is more important than ever. Soils with more organic content and less mineral will improve the soil you have for better plant growth. Soils like compost or humus have more organic matter in them than topsoil and are better for nutrient hungry applications. Organic matter can come from a variety of sources and they all have slightly different benefits and drawbacks.

Consider Organics
Many great organic brands produce bagged soils. Often these are perfect for creating new beds from scratch where you have to create your soil almost from the ground up. If your space is too large for the budget to handle entirely organic soils, they can be mixed with other composts or topsoils.
