Note from Rio Nuevo Board Chairman McCusker

Immediately following the approval to do a $7.8M remodel of the aging Tucson Convention Center arena the Rio Nuevo board has committed to spend $4.3M to build a 250 space parking garage at the corner of Broadway and 5th Avenue.  Atop that garage will be the privately built AC Hotel, a Marriot chain well known in Europe and opening in America in San Diego, Chicago and now Tucson. The hotel budget is over $27M dollars and will bring 130 beds of new, modern hotel space to downtown.

After years of spits and starts Rio Nuevo is making a difference downtown, focusing on projects that increase sales tax revenue and bring people downtown.

Other hotel projects are on the drawing board and we would not be surprised if 3 or 4 projects can launch by the end of the 2013.

Once the hotel is launched we can focus our attention on the far Westside, the Mission Gardens and area at the base of A Mountain.

The Rio Nuevo board is excited to be involved in these meaningful projects and committed to maximize the TIF funds made available to us by our legislature.

See you downtown,

Fletcher McCusker

The Sunshine Mile

In 1953, a contest was sponsored by the East Broadway Merchants to come up with a name for the strip between Euclid and Country Club. The winning entry was, "The Sunshine Mile". The Modernist architectural heritage of this street is a regional asset located in the TIF district.

This two mile strip is lined with award winning boutiques and restaurants, as well as many neighborhood services, all locally owned and operated. Come to Broadway Boulevard for a unique shopping experience and eat in restaurants that offer the best local food in Tucson. Take a trip to  Broadway Boulevard and shop the Historic Sunshine Mile.
