Tip of the Month
Summertime Options for
Screener Training

Screening shot
Summer is often the best time for Head Start s taff to acquire or brush up on hearing screening skills. Investing
in screener training
pays off because proficiency affects referral rates and the amount
of time required
for screening. Whether new screeners in your program need to build their skill set from the ground up,
or experienced screeners just need to brush up on techniques, the ECHO Initiative has training options to help.

Option 1 - Web Class Series

The upcoming Web Class consists of four, interactive web-based sessions, approximately 60 minutes each, along with skill-based assignments that allow participants to practice the concepts covered during the presentations. (Access to OAE equipment is required.)  Each class builds on information and activities from the previous session,
so screeners should plan to attend all four sessions:

Dates: July 17th, 20th, 24th, 27th  (2017)
Time:  1:00 pm Eastern, 12:00 pm Central, 11:00 am Mountain, 10:00 am Pacific, 9:00 am Alaska, and
7:00 am Hawaii

Individuals who attend all sessions and complete all assignments will receive a Certificate of Completion.  Register now! (Registration closes on July 14th.)

Option 2 - Online Video Tutorial Module Series

Programs that are providing their own in-house training to screeners should consider using the OAE Tutorial Modules and additional training tools available at
www.KidsHearing.org.  The content of the Modules (listed  below) is the same as the Web Class series. Trainers can instruct screeners to watch each of the short modules (2 - 6 minutes in length) and complete practice activities that will help them prepare for screening children. (This includes the important step of learning to use the equipment by first practicing on adults.) Trainers can then make the best use of live, hands-on training time by modeling additional child management techniques and providing feedback to learners as they begin to practice screening children. Learners who are new to OAE hearing screening should be instructed to move sequentially through all 11 mod ules. Screeners who  need Tutorial Video Modules to brush up on their skills can focus their learning time on Modules 6 - 10. The online Tu torial Modules and accompanying resources
also allow screeners the option of reviewing the instruction independently at their own pace.

Tutorial Modules:
  1. Introduction to OAE Hearing Screening
  2. How OAE Screening Works
  3. Brief Overview of the OAE Screening Protocol
  4. Plan Your OAE Screening Program
  5. Get to Know Your OAE Equipment
  6. OAE Screening Step-by-Step
  7. Develop Your OAE Screening Skills
  8. Get Ready to Screen Children
  9. Strategies for Successful OAE Screening
  10. OAE Screening Protocol in Detail
  11. Establish a Tracking and Monitoring System

In addition to these two options, some states have trainers who work statewide to support community-based screening efforts.
