"Break on through to the other side......."

Paintings by Sandra Ragan

This exhibit is based on the gathering in Haight-Ashbury during 1967 where those involved allegedly rejected the conformist and materialist values of modern life; there was an emphasis on sharing and community.

BREAKING NEWS

This is the last art exhibit on Third Friday!!!

We appreciate all of you who have fought your way through the grid of traffic on Friday evenings to join us each month.  In order to make life easier for you and for us artists, beginning with our August exhibit, the artists' reception will be held on Third Saturday.

To not disappoint those who love the Third Friday event, please read below:

June 2017 marks the tenth Anniversary of the Ukulele Club of Oak Park.   Originally formed in the Oak Park Arts District, the club  has met at 17 Harrison Street, a storefront known as the Harrison Works Art Gallery.  The club will meet there for the last two times on June 16th and July 21st, 6:30 - 9 pm.  As of August, the club will meet at The Dancing Krow & Third Friday Gallery every third Friday of the month from 6:30-9 pm.

The club has played various events and venues over these ten years.   Performances have ranged from Arts District events, gallery openings, birthday parties and The Fest For Beatle Fans at The Hyatt Regency Hotel; the most high profile performance held at the famous Oak Park institution, the Unity Temple.   The club has also made various recordings.

Long-time artist and musician on Harrison Street, Liz Gaylord formed the club ten years ago as a way to bring her enthusiasm of playing the ukulele to a wider range of people.  For the last decade, the ukulele has gained a renewed popularity not known since the mid sixties.   George Harrison's love of the simple, sweet instrument has been well documented.  His fellow Beatle, Paul McCartney has featured the ukulele in his concerts for years.  Eddie Vedder, the lead singer of Pearl Jam, released a record of ukulele songs in 2011. Gaylord has founded this group of like-minded players and singers that have an affinity for playing popular songs of old and new.   There is no fee to join the club.  Sheet music is provided at each meeting.   All skill levels are welcomed.  And visitors welcome to listen in and view the art!
