 This summer we begin the fifth year of Tam: Tastes of Yiddish Culture for Kids & Teens. Through this program, KlezCalifornia has designed and tested twenty-six hour-long lesson plans for Jewish kids in grades K-12 in religious schools, day schools, and Jewish day camps. Since the start of the program four years ago, we've made 80 presentations in 23 schools, and reached almost 1,400 kids!
 Subjects covered include learning a little Yiddish, Jewish lives in Yiddish song, what a Yiddish short story can tell us about Jewish values, Yiddish culture and your family, Yiddish culture in America life and American Jewish life, exploring paintings and photographs about Jewish life, history of klezmer music, and more.
The Tam program started with presentations in the Bay Area, and we are now pleased to report it is being spread by presenters and organizers to schools in San Diego (where the first presentation was May 25), Syracuse, Morgantown (WV), Pittsburgh, Ann Arbor, Winnipeg, and Las Vegas!

KlezCalifornia Klezmer Workshops and Jams

 Join us for one (or more!) of our four summertime KlezCalifornia Klezmer Workshops & Jams. Each is taught by a terrific musician and teacher and includes learning tunes with authentic klezmer style, and a traditional jam. The balance of learning by ear vs. with charts is chosen by each teacher. For all instruments; no klezmer experience needed (but it doesn't hurt!). Must be at least intermediate level on your instrument. Mute required if you are a brass player. Optional: recording device. To get a head start, check out sheet music and/or sound files in advance.

"Menashe" (2017, 81 mins.), Joshua Z. Weinstein's Brooklyn-based Yiddish drama, is an authentic, tightly written, compelling story for anyone jonesing to hear more than
a bisl (little bit) of the
mamalushn (mother tongue, Yiddish). KlezCalifornia is a co-presenter.
Menashe, a complex and lovable shlemil, is a young widower deep in the heart of New York's ultra-Orthodox Hasidik Jewish community who is fighting for custody of his son and struggling with his aversion to marrying again. The director will attend the showing and answer questions.
Tickets: $15 general / $14 students, seniors. Multi-film passes also available.
