Library Announcements
From the Library Administrator

June brought a lot of rain and a lot of reading with summer reading programs now in full swing.  The Children's Department is enjoying a steady stream of summer visitors. Several festive July programs require no registration and families are encouraged to drop-in. Plan on attending a Twilight Tales evening or the Reader's Theater Extravaganza.

Visitors may have noticed  the new flower boxes near the courtyard entrance. T.J. Roberts from local Boy Scout Troop 512 built the boxes and donated them to the Woodridge Library as part of his Eagle Scout Project. The boxes are an attractive addition to the library and we appreciate the craftsmanship and care T.J. put into his project.

Town Centre is now in the midst of a larger beautification project. Repairs are being made to concrete sidewalks and curbs and, beginning July 6, all parking lots will be resurfaced. The work has been planned in phases with some areas of Town Centre parking always available for patrons.

We have tried to make one of the outside book returns more accessible while the Village Hall lot is being paved. If weather conditions allow, work will focus specifically on the library's parking lot the week of July 13. Patrons should find parking in front of the Village Hall or near the Public Works or Post Office buildings. All areas of improvement in Town Centre should be done by mid-August. This project is much-needed, and we know there will be some inconvenience. We appreciate everyone's understanding and patience.

Several new computer classes are being introduced this summer including the useful Government Information on the Web. Currently, all upcoming computer classes have openings providing a good opportunity to learn something new.

Local artist Mary Yezek recently worked with the  G.O.A.T.s (Group of Advising Teens) to create masks using their  own faces as molds. Fellow artist,  Nancy Staszak, is offering a printmaking class on July 30 for adults. She promises that the gelatin prints method she uses in her artwork can be used by anyone to create images based on nature. Nancy's prints are being featured in the Library Art Gallery this month, along with works from Terry Niccoli.

The Library will be closed Saturday, July 4. We wish you a happy Independence Day and look forward to seeing you at a program or reading in the Library this July, even if it is sunny!

July's Recommended Resource

We've noticed that many of the participants in the library's adult summer reading program are reading e-books. The Woodridge Library has several different collections of e-books that allow our card holders free checkout of both e-books and audiobooks. eReadIllinois features recently published books, fiction, non-fiction, children, and teen collections. T he use of the Axis 360 app enables patrons to browse, checkout and download e-books and audiobooks to tablets or smart devices.

Need help? Email askus@woodridgelibrary.org, call the Adult/YA Reference Desk at 630-487-2577 for advice, or download a handout for Android Devices, Apple Devices, Kindle Fire tablets, or dedicated e-readers (like the Nook Simple Touch).

Links to e-books, e-magazines, audiobooks and animated  books can be found under the E-books & More tab of the woodridgelibrary.org website.

July's Art Gallery features the pastels and oils of Terry Niccoli and the gelatin prints and collages of Nancy Staszak. Local artists who have each held successful Woodridge Gallery shows, Nancy and Terry have created a botanical inspired exhibit, "Garden Companions and Roadside Distractions."
Community members are invited to meet the artists and discuss their different but complimentary styles during a reception on Sunday, July 26 from 2 - 4 p.m. in the library's lobby.
Patrons can also register for Nancy Staszak's class Gelatin Printing with Leaves from Nature . The class will take place July 30 at 6 p.m. in the 2nd floor meeting room, and it will focus on an easy and inexpensive method of creating images that can be used for cards, decorations or even works of art.
