July 21, 2014

The rain has made the trails just perfect!  And it's giving those wildflowers just a bit of extra life.  At the same time the busy summer trail season is upon us and the trails are more crowded than usual - please be courteous to others, keep alert for other users and share the trail with a smile.

Here are some upcoming events of interest:
County Commissioner Conversation (on BullWheel deal) - July 23, 5-6:30 at the Incline Library
Commissioner Berkbigler will be available to take input and discuss the proposed BullWheel/Incline Flume land exchange.  County staff should also be on hand to answer questions
DIAMOND PEAK master/trail plan
IVGID "meet and greet" and Trustee meeting -
July 30, The Chateau at the Championship GC
the informal "meet and greet" is from 4 to 5:30pm with the meeting and presentation of the Master Plan to the Trustees starting at 6pm

Diamond Peak (summer ops) Plan
If you were not aware of this already....Diamond Peak Ski area (an IVGID facility) has been working on development of an updated master plan which includes a trail system.  It would offer hiking only and multi-use trails, summer operation of Snowflake lodge and several other activities.  The system would incorporate the Incline Flume Trail and connect up to the Tahoe Rim Trail. It's important that we attend the IVGID meeting on Wed, July 30th and show our support of trails at Diamond Peak.
Incline Flume Trail Project
A final decision by the Washoe County Commissioners on the "BullWheel" deal is likely not to be scheduled until at least September.  While much of the background research and studies are about complete - the land appraisals have not been done yet.
Also new....the Ponderosa land owner has increased the amount of Ponderosa land in the proposal to over 18 acres in order to ensure protection of the BullWheel historical site by allowing a slight realignment of the current trail course to a better route.  This is great news from a heritage preservation perspective and for a better trail.

Our goal is to be ready for the completion of the required USFS studies this fall so that we can work with the USFS and complete their "paperwork" over the winter and start trail work in the Spring of 2015.  If the Bullwheel deal is approved we have minimal trail construction to accomplish.  If the land exchange does not happen we have a trail rerouting plan that is viable although it  involves a bit more trail construction and elevation gain. Your donations will help keep us on track to make some "on the ground" progress next summer - thank you donors!!!!
