Dancing with Nature

January 2018 Issue 1 Vol 8
News, Life and the Art Culture in the Smoky Mountains

January arrived and we jumped with both feet cruising through the inevitable inventory while taking on a new event, Winter Arts Smokies Style. Despite frigid temps crowds came out for a day of chili tasting and art demonstrations. Though it was "chili" outside we had a hot time going on inside with Teri Siewert firing up her torch to create one of a kind art.

We were not the only ones jumping in January as changes were going on downtown. Blossom on Main (Thai restaurant) has converted to "Firefly Taps and Grill" featuring Carolina Mountain cooking. Burr Studio has been purchased by Babs Szczepanski, owner of Ellie's Fine Resale. The gallery will reopen soon with a bit of a new look. Fifi's consignment remains the same but has a new name, "Flowering Dogwood Boutique".

Now onto February which is shaping up to be quite fun. On Saturday, February 10th, we are celebrating "Love the Locals" with a special day planned. Margaret Roberts will be in house to help you make a Valentine card for that someone special.  Then stick around for hot chocolate, cookies, super discounts, and receive a special treat. During the month of February, throughout downtown, with a donation to Haywood Christian Ministry to supplement heating costs for those in need (and it has been super cold here), sign a heart to be displayed.

On Saturday, February 17th, downtown will be filled with a variety activities to appeal to all ages complete with a roaming snowman handing out hugs and beads.   For a "HeART Warming" evening, Megan Richard will be demonstrating 4-7 with all the bonuses of Art After Dark.

2018 promises to be filled with good times on Main Street Waynesville. We look forward to seeing you.

     Gary Fleeman
Wood Worker

Gary began working with wood out of necessity. "I needed a specific sized table which I couldn't find so decided to make it myself. Soon after, I built a few picture frames, then cake stands and wedding arbors for a friend's daughter and my daughter's wedding. After retiring I set up my workshop and started a one-man company: Carolina Mt. Woodworks".
Gary can be found most days in his workshop near Greens Creek building furniture, Old Style benches and tables out of reclaimed barn and log cabin wood and even coffins, by request.
"My wife loves wooden boxes and asked me to make a few. I quickly discovered I enjoyed it and set up a section of my workshop dedicated to box making. Every box is made one at a time and no two are the same".
Gary lives outside the mountain town of Sylva NC with Joan, his wife of 36 years, and two dogs Marcus and Kylie.
