June 1, 2018: Year 8; Edition 11
Hi, All ~

LESS THAN 90 DAYS TO NOVA? Can that be true?! Hard to imagine, but NOVA Open is steaming home like a freight train! Take time to plan your schedule and lock in your spots today - you'll be glad you did.

Members of the NOVA Open staff received warm welcome from the international community recently as they continued their whirlwind tour of major events in 2018. Stops at the London Grand Tournament and Manchester-based Malifaux International Team Championships capped the tour last week. While NOVA Open volunteers represented themselves well, the highlight was enjoying the company of fellow gamers and hobbyists from around the world. Like the NOVA Open, major tournaments and convention-style events present attendees with unique experiences that reflect a truly passionate deep-dive into the best parts of our shared hobbies and games. We thank the organizers of these events for putting in the time and effort to support the hobby

We are excited to announce that the Warhammer 40,000 Grand Tournament has sold out. The X-Wing National Championship events are so close to selling out, the thrill is palpable. You should know that - when events do sell out - waiting lists become active. We encourage you to add your name to any list you may be interested in. Life happens, so the chances of moving up on a list are probable as attendees drop. For anyone who does have to drop, the NOVA Open cart ( novaopenstore.com) has an integrated event transfer feature you may want to explore.

I would like to personally invite anyone within the Northern Virginia region to join me and our Minister of Terrain, Bob Likins, at NOVA Open's next Terrain Day - next week on Saturday, June 9 at 10:00am. Details are outlined in the terrain day article below.

The growth of NOVA Open has always centered around our all-volunteer staff and the hobby itself. Early terrain days created friendships which have lasted nearly a decade, cemented by our annual schedule of builds where we enjoy shared skills, camaraderie, good food and libations as we toil over creating terrain that becomes such an integral part of OUR convention. We are always hoping to see fresh faces and to increase our unique circle. All are welcome, and I hope to see you there.

The next newsletter, in just two weeks, will put us that much closer to the 9th Annual NOVA Open! Talk to you then.

COMMUNITY NEWS
NOVA OPEN'S LORD OF THE RING EVENTS FEATURED ON GAMES WORKSHOP'S WARHAMMER COMMUNITY
Some of NOVA Open's most popular events are run in its Lord of the Ring hall, with dedicated leads and a growing player community base. We're excited to share Games Workshop's Warhammer Community recently published article which relives NOVA Open's 2017 LotR events and previews NOVA Open 2018. Read all about it HERE.

Special thanks to Adam Troke and the rest of the Games Workshop community team for supporting the NOVA Open Convention and sharing our Middle-earth LotR events with their followers.
2018 LONDON GT BEST OVERALL - MIKE BRANDT
Last month NOVA Open’s founder and CEO, Mike Brandt, traveled to Games Workshop’s home country to take part in the 2018 London GT, and he did very well. The five- round 2000-pt GT was held from May 18th to May 20th and featured more than 450 players from all over the world.

Mike brought the Imperium’s finest to battle. His army included a brigade of hard-scrabble Catachans, a host from the curse-afflicted Blood Angels chapter with two powerful Space Marine captains, and the Emperor’s own Custodes riding Dawneagle Jetbikes. Mike lead the forces of the Imperium to victory over five opponents, including foul Nurgle Daemons, ancient Necrons, ravenous Tyranids, and two brutal and cunning (or is that cunning and brutal?) Ork Waaaghs! When the dust settled, he scored 181 points, beating rival Mike Porter by a single point to be declared Tournament Champion!

Congratulations, Mike! Flashback to NOVA Open Short 2012:Too bad you can't play in your own 40K GT ... it just wouldn't be right!

NOCF RAFFLE NEWS
NOCF 2018 SUMMER RAFFLES - PREVIEW
The NOVA Open Charitable Foundation (NOCF) works with some of the best miniature artists in the world to give the community at large rare opportunities to win unique treasures. In this newsletter, NOCF previews two 2018 Summer Raffle models to get tabletop wargamers ready for the July 1 launch of ticket sales.
BULL OF RAGE - MASSIVE DARKNESS MINOTUARE
A truly epic sculpt by CMON's board game Massive Darkness, painted by Roman Lappat, Massive Voodoo, in his unique and soulful paintwork. A green mosh base supports the powerful red colors used on the figure. Find cool texture work all over the model, precise use of light and shadow on all different shapes, and study Roman's personal brushstroke on this classic miniature sculpt. It could be yours if you buy the winning ticket - which also means you're supporting tabletop wargamer charity, NOCF. Roman's basework was put on top of a wooden, black plinth to make it stand out. The figure, including base, can be removed for gaming purposes.

2018 NOVA OPEN GAMING EVENTS
PRIMER TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES FIXED!
UPDATE: MICROSOFT HAS FIXED THIS ISSUE! If you attempt to access one of your event primers lately via certain devices / browsers, you may run into some technical difficulties with access. We're aware, and we're working on it! Since the Draft Primers are constantly being updated by event leads due to attendee feedback, we work hard to use contemporary collaboration software like Office 365 in order to maintain living documents for our attendees to always be up to date on where things stand.
EVENT PRIMERS FOR NOVA OPEN 2018

The NOVA Open is a full 4-day convention with a move-in this year from Monday, August 27th to Wednesday, August 29th - and a move-out day on Sunday, September 2 to Monday, September 3rd.

Able bodied support staff is needed for move-in and move-out: SERIOUSLY! The NOVA Open moves out of eight storage units using two massive semi tractor trailers into 75,000 square feet of convention space at the Hyatt Regency. We run on volunteers - top to bottom.
