Hatfield Township Awarded $10,000 through PECO Green Region Program
Hatfield Township this month received a $10,000 grant from PECO, through PECO's program in support of open space preservation, environmental conservation and enhancement of parks and recreation resources. Hatfield Township will use the funds for new features for the "Kratz property," a parcel of land the Township purchased last year with County and State open space acquisition grants.
Bound by Orvilla Road to the west and Line Lexington Road to the east, the 10-acre tract also hosts a portion of the Unionville Creek corridor. Through the PECO grant, the land will be outfitted with a walking path, resting benches, and shade trees. A small lot for vehicles to park onsite will be added at the same time by Township public works staff, who will also contribute to the labor needed to make the grant improvements.
Township planners view the new trail on the Kratz property as a start of the community's longer-term goal to provide a complete off-road pathway connecting Line Lexington and Orvilla roads. The Kratz property shares boundaries with the historic Frick Meetinghouse. All total, the land at this location forms a natural setting of nearly 34 acres, open to the public for passive recreational use.
Hatfield Township's grant proposal was one of 18 selected by PECO for 2012 funding, from a field of 50 submittals in the five-county region. The Township also received a PECO grant in 2008 to develop the Chestnut Street Trail Park, a passive park at the corner of School Road and Vine Street with resting benches and a running water feature. Since initiating the Green Region Program in 2004, PECO has awarded more than $1 million to local governments and non-profit organizations throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania, for use in completing "green" projects.
